ON-VEHICLE SERVICE

PARKING BRAKES

(2) Turn the ignition switch to "ON" position, and 

start the engine.

(3) Repeatedly depress the brake pedal until the 

pedal stroke no longer changes with the 
engine running.

NOTE: Depressing the brake pedal repeatedly 
adjusts shoe clearance correctly.

(4) Turn the ignition switch to "OFF" position, and 

stop the engine.

CAUTION

If the parking brake pull rod stroke is below the 
standard value and the braking is too firm, the 
rear brakes may drag.

(5) Adjust with the adjusting nut so that the joint 

and the equalizer are vertical as shown in the 
figure.

(6) After adjusting the parking brake pull rod 

stroke, jack up the rear end of the vehicle, and 
then release the parking brake and turn the 
rear wheels to check that the rear brakes are 
not dragging.

CAUTION

Do not apply grease or lubricant to the switch 
and the switch installation section to avoid mal-
function of the switch. In addition, do not use 
gloves which have grease on them.
1. Remove the rear floor console assembly (Refer to 

GROUP 52A 

− Rear Floor Console Assembly ).

2. Check for continuity between the parking brake 

switch terminal and the switch mounting bolt.

Check condition

Normal condition

When parking brake lever is 
pulled.

Continuity exists

Ω or less)

When parking brake lever is 
released.

Open circuit

CAUTION

Do not apply grease or lubricant to the switch 
and the switch installation section to avoid mal-
function of the switch. In addition, do not use 
gloves which have grease on them.
1. Remove the lower panel assembly (Refer to 

GROUP 52A 

− Instrument Panel Assembly ).

2. Check for continuity between the parking brake 

switch terminal and the switch mounting nut.

Check condition

Normal condition

When parking brake pull rod 
is pulled.

Continuity exists

Parking brake pull rod assembly

Pull the parking brake pull rod to the position shown 
in the figure. Then, fit the pin to the groove and 
remove the parking brake front cable.
