BRAKE LAMP SWITCH CIRCUIT (CONTINUED)

When Monitored and Set Condition

•

When Monitored: With the ignition on.

•

Set Condition: The Controller Antilock Brake (CAB) detects an abnormal condition on the Brake Lamp Switch
circuit.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

FUSED IGNITION SWITCH OUTPUT CIRCUIT TO BRAKE LAMP RELAY OPEN

FUSED IGNITION SWITCH OUTPUT CIRCUIT TO BRAKE LAMP SWITCH OPEN

TRACTION SYSTEM RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH B OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH B OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH B OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND

BRAKE LAMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE

BRAKE LAMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN

BRAKE LAMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND

BRAKE LAMP RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE

BRAKE LAMP RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN

Diagnostic Test

1.

MEASURE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT VOLTAGE

Note: Inspect Fuse 2 located in the Illumination Control Module/IP
Fuse Block. If the fuse is open, repair the cause of the open fuse
before continuing.
Turn the ignition off.

Disconnect the Controller Antilock Brake harness connector.

Note: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Turn the ignition on.

Measure the voltage of the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit at
Controller Antilock Brake harness connector cavity 1.

Is the voltage above 10 volts?

Yes

>> Go to 5

No

>> Go to 2

2.

MEASURE THE TRACTION SYSTEM RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT VOLTAGE

Turn the ignition off.

Disconnect Brake Lamp Switch harness connector A.

Note: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Turn the ignition on.

Measure the voltage of the Traction System Relay Output circuit at
Brake Lamp Switch harness connector A cavity 2.

Is the voltage above 10 volts?

Yes

>> Go to 3

No

>> Repair the Traction System Relay Output circuit.

Perform ABS VERIFICATION TEST.

MEASURE THE RESISTANCE OF THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT

Turn the ignition off.

Measure the resistance of the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit
from the Brake Lamp Switch harness connector A cavity 1 to CAB har-
ness connector cavity 1.

Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?

Yes

>> Go to 4

No

>> Repair the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit for an

open.

Perform ABS VERIFICATION TEST.

MEASURE RESISTANCE BETWEEN GROUND AND THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT

With the ignition off.

Measure the resistance between ground and the Brake Lamp Switch A
Output circuit at Controller Antilock Brake harness connector cavity 1.

Is the resistance above 100 kohms?

Yes

>> Adjust or replace the Brake Lamp Switch.

Perform ABS VERIFICATION TEST.

No

>> Repair the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit for a short

to ground.

Perform ABS VERIFICATION TEST.

MEASURE THE VOLTAGE OF THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT WITH THE BRAKE
PEDAL PRESSED

With the ignition on.

Measure the voltage of the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit at CAB
harness connector cavity 1 while pressing the brake pedal.

Is the voltage below 1.0 volt?

Yes

>> Go to 7

No

>> Go to 6

MEASURE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH A OUTPUT CIRCUIT VOLTAGE

Turn the ignition off.

Disconnect Brake Lamp Switch harness connector A.

Note: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Turn the ignition on.

Measure the voltage of the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit at CAB
harness connector cavity 1.

Is the voltage below 1.0 volt?

Yes

>> Replace the Brake Lamp Switch.

Perform ABS VERIFICATION TEST.

No

>> Repair the Brake Lamp Switch A Output circuit for a short

to voltage.

Perform ABS VERIFICATION TEST.
