♦ Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm - VAG1331-
♦ Sealing Grease - G 052 128 A1-

Caution

This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer

to component overview prior to starting procedure.

Mandatory Replacement Parts
♦ Seal - Left Flange Shaft
Removing
– Remove the left wheel.
– Remove the noise insulation. Refer to ⇒  Body Exterior; Rep.

Gr.  66 ; Noise Insulation; Overview - Noise Insulation .

– Remove the lower section of the left front wheel housing liner.

Refer to ⇒  Body Exterior; Rep. Gr.  66 ; Wheel Housing Liner;

Front Wheel Housing Liner, Removing and Installing .

– Turn the steering wheel to the left.
– Remove drive axle from flange shaft. Refer to ⇒  Suspension,

Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.  40 ; Drive Axle; Drive Axle, Re‐

moving and Installing .

– Tie the drive axle as high up as possible. Do not damage the

paint on the drive axle.

– Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit -

SMN372500- or Drip Tray under the transmission.

– Remove the flange shaft bolt. To do this, install two bolts into

the flange and counterhold the flange shaft using a pry bar.

– Remove the flange shaft and the pressure spring.

– Remove the flange shaft seal using the Slide Hammer Set -

VW771- and the Slide Hammer Set - Hook - VW771/37- .

Installing
– Lightly oil new seal on outer circumference.
– Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip -arrow- halfway

with Sealing Grease - G 052 128 A1- .

– Install the seal all the way in without tilting it.
– Install the flange shaft.
– Press the flange shaft against the transmission and secure it

with the bolt.

– Attach the drive axles to the transmission. Refer to ⇒  Sus‐

pension, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.  40 ; Drive Axle; Drive

Axle, Removing and Installing .

– Check the transmission fluid and fill if necessary. Refer to

⇒ “8 Transmission Fluid”, page 125

 .

– Install the lower section of the left front wheel housing liner.

Refer to ⇒  Body Exterior; Rep. Gr.  66 ; Wheel Housing Liner;

Front Wheel Housing Liner, Removing and Installing .

– Install the noise insulation. Refer to ⇒  Body Exterior; Rep. Gr. 

66 ; Noise Insulation; Overview - Noise Insulation .

– Install the wheel. Refer to ⇒  Suspension, Wheels, Steering;

Rep. Gr.  44 ; Wheels and Tires; Wheel Bolt Tightening Spec‐

ifications .

Right Seal, Replacing

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Seal Installer - One-Piece Seal - T10148-
♦ Spindle from the Seal Installer - Driver Set - 3066-
♦ Slide Hammer Set - VW771-
♦ Slide Hammer Set - Hook - VW771/37-
♦ Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm - VAG1331-
♦ Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit - SMN372500-

Caution

This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer

to component overview prior to starting procedure.

Mandatory Replacement Parts
♦ Seal - Right Flange Shaft
♦ Bolts - CV Boot to Inner CV Joint

Right Flange Shaft Seal, Replacing

Note

The seal -1- and the sleeve -2- are a single part.

The seal and the sleeve can only be replaced together.

Removing
– Remove the noise insulation. Refer to ⇒  Body Exterior; Rep.

Gr.  66 ; Noise Insulation; Overview - Noise Insulation .

– Turn steering as far as possible toward right.

– Remove the drive axle heat shield if equipped -arrows-.

– Remove drive axle -1- from flange shaft. Refer to ⇒  Suspen‐

sion, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.  40 ; Drive Axle; Drive Axle,

Removing and Installing .

– Tie the drive axle as high up as possible. Do not damage the

paint on the drive axle.

Note

On some engines, the drive axle cannot be tied up so that the

transmission flange shaft can be removed.

Remove the right drive axle. Refer to ⇒  Suspension, Wheels,

Steering; Rep. Gr.  40 ; Drive Axle; Drive Axle, Removing and

Installing .

– Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit -

SMN372500- or Drip Tray under the transmission.

– Remove the flange shaft bolt -arrow-. To do this, install two

bolts into the flange and counterhold the flange shaft using a

tire iron.

– Remove the flange shaft and the pressure spring.

The seal is located in a metal housing.
– Remove the seal and the sleeve together.
A ridge is located on the internal diameter of the sleeve.
– Install the Slide Hammer Set - Hook - VW771/37- directly be‐

hind the ridge inside the sleeve.

– Using force, push the Slide Hammer Set - Hook - VW771/37-

into the sleeve.

Installing
– Clean the seal seat inside the transmission.

– Install the seal and the sleeve together.
A - Install the Spindle on the Seal Installer - Driver Set - 3066- into

the threaded piece in the differential.
B - M12 Nut
– Turn the nut -B- and pull the seal with the sleeve all the way

over the Seal Installer - One-Piece Seal - T10148- .

– Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip -arrow- halfway

with Sealing Grease - G 052 128 A1- .

– Install the flange shaft.

– Press the flange shaft against the transmission and secure it

with the bolt -arrow-.

– Fasten the right drive axle to the flange shaft. Refer to ⇒  Sus‐

pension, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.  40 ; Drive Axle; Drive

Axle, Removing and Installing .
