GENERAL DESCRIPTION

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM (TCL)

13D-3

COMPONENTS AND FUNCTIONS

COMPONENT

FUNCTION

ABS/TCL-ECU

The wheelspin of the drive wheels (front wheels) is detected based on
signals from the wheel spin sensors.

Engine control information is sent to PCM, based on wheelspin
information and the engine information from PCM.

The diagnostic trouble code and input check code are sent to the data
link connector.

An illumination signal is sent to the "TCL OFF" indicator light, based on
the signal from the TCL switch.

An illumination signal is sent to the TCL work indicator light, based on
the TCL operation state.

Data link connector

If the MUT-III scan tool is connected, the diagnostic trouble code and input
check code from the ABS/TCL-ECU can be read.

PCM

The engine information necessary for TCL control is sent to
ABS/TCL-ECU.

The engine control information from ABS/TCL-ECU is used to determine
engine output.

"TCL OFF" indicator light

Turns ON when the TCL switch is turned OFF, and notifies the TCL
function is inactive.

Turns ON or flashes when the TCL function is inactive because of the
TCL system fail-safe function, and notifies the abnormal condition in the
TCL system.

TCL switch

Turns ON and OFF the TCL function through switch operations.

TCL work indicator light

Flashes when TCL is operating to notify the operation.

Illuminates when TCL fails to notify trouble.

Wheel speed sensor

Outputs signals directly proportional to the rotation speed of each wheel, to
ABS/TCL-ECU.

SYSTEM OUTLINE

The wheel speed sensors transmit to ABS/TCL-ECU
such AC signals as have cycle changes directly pro-
portional to the rotation speed of each wheel.
ABS/TCL-ECU calculates the wheel rotation speed
of each wheel, based on signals from the wheel
speed sensors, and monitors the wheel spin of the
drive wheels (front wheels), based on differences in
rotation speed between the front and rear wheels.
Upon detection of the wheelspin of the drive wheels
(front wheels), ABS/TCL-ECU calculates an engine
control based on the wheelspin amount, the engine
information sent from PCM, and the ON/OFF infor-
mation from the TCL switch, and then outputs engine

torque control information to PCM. Also
ABS/TCL-ECU outputs an flash signal to the TCL
work indicator light on the combination meter, and
TCL work indicator light flashes to indicate TCL is at
work.
PCM controls the engine output, based on the
engine control information from ABS/TCL-ECU, in
order to prevent wheelspin.
ABS/TCL-ECU monitors the operation state of the
TCL system. If an abnormal condition arises in the
TCL system and the fail-safe function works,
ABS/TCL-ECU outputs an illumination signal to the
TCL OFF indicator light and TCL work indicator light
on the combination meter to illuminate it, thereby
indicating the TCL system abnormal condition. In
addition, connecting the MUT-III scan tool to the data
link connector allows abnormal conditions of the TCL
system to be checked.

OUTPUT FUNCTIONS

.

Self-diagnosis
When there is a cancellation of the TCL system oper-
ation not intentionally made by the driver, it is possi-
ble to determine the cause simply by reading the
diagnostic trouble code.
