2003 ENGINE PERFORMANCE

Pin Voltage/PID Value Charts - F150 Pickup - Bi-Fuel - Gasoline/LPG

INTRODUCTION

Parameter Identification (PID) mode allows access to certain data values, analog and digital inputs and outputs,
calculated values, and system status information. There are 2 types of PID lists available. The first is a Ford
specific PID list that can be accessed by using New Generation Star (NGS) scan tool or Worldwide Diagnostic
System (WDS). The second is a Generic OBD-II PID list. This is a standard set of PIDs that all manufacturer's
scan tools can access. Generic PIDs are located at the end of each PIN VOLTAGE/PID VALUES chart.

PIN VOLTAGE/PID VALUES charts are used for diagnosing intermittent symptoms and faults that are unable
to be resolved during self-diagnostics. Pin tests ensure the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is receiving and
transmitting proper voltage and other signals. If diagnosing a symptom, see appropriate symptom in
SYMPTOM TESTING under TEST PROCEDURES.

PID values are continuously updated when accessing PIDs from a specific PID list. Before performing tests,
ensure mechanical conditions have been inspected and self-diagnostics has been attempted. Technical Service
Bulletins (TSBs) may also be helpful in correcting a hard to diagnose problem.

TEST EQUIPMENT

In order to read Parameter Identification (PID) values, a New Generation Star (007-00500 ) scan tool,
Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) or other OBD-II compliant scan tool is required. A DVOM, 104-pin
Breakout Box (014-00950 ) and appropriate adapter cable are used to check PCM pin values. If a breakout box
is not available, PCM pin values can be checked by backprobing PCM connector.

TEST PROCEDURES

PIN VOLTAGE TESTING

Access PCM connector. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE LOCATIONS . If a breakout box is
available, disconnect negative battery terminal. Connect breakout box to PCM harness connector and PCM.
Reconnect negative battery cable. Take desired measurements between ground pin and specified pin on

NOTE:

For information pertaining to the gasoline portion, see PIN VOLTAGE CHARTS -
CUTAWAY, ECONOLINE, F450 SUPER DUTY, F550 SUPER DUTY, PICKUP & RV
CUTAWAY - GASOLINE & CNG article.

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems

may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer
systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN
PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting
battery.

breakout box. If breakout box is not available, take desired measurements between ground pin and specified pin
at PCM connector (backprobe PCM connector). See appropriate illustration in PIN VOLTAGE/PID VALUE
CHARTS
under PID DEFINITIONS & PIN VOLTAGE/PID VALUES.

SYMPTOM TESTING

On all applications, using REFERENCE VALUE SYMPTOM CHART can help in selecting PIDs that are
related to a specific fault area. See Fig. 1 . Select a symptom from the chart, note category number and proceed
to Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 . For multiple symptoms, select most evident symptom. Match category number with
related PIDs/measured signals (component and signal) and perform PID TESTING .

PID TESTING

Some vehicles may not display all input and output PID signals. Reference values may vary plus or minus 20
percent depending on operating conditions and other factors. RPM values are axle ratio and tire size dependent.

Accessing Generic OBD-II PIDs

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the
following steps:

z

Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.

z

Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.

z

Select GENERIC OBD-II OPTIONS. Press CONT button if monitors are not complete.

z

Select PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD.

z

Turn ignition switch to ON position or start engine and allow to idle.

z

Follow operating instructions from scan tool menu.

z

Select PIDs and press START to begin monitoring.

Compare actual PID values on scan tool to PID values in appropriate chart under PIN VOLTAGE/PID
VALUE CHARTS
under PID DEFINITIONS & PIN VOLTAGE/PID VALUES. If PID value is not as
specified, perform appropriate SYSTEM TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - BI-FUEL - GASOLINE/LPG
article.

Accessing Ford Specific PIDs

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the
following steps:

z

Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.

z

Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.

z

Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK.

z

Select POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE.
