2.5 INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT, ALIGNMENT

Alignment inspection

-

Use high-quality wheel alignment equipment

for the inspection. The equipment must be

calibrated regularly and preferably be of the

type that can be calibrated before every use.

-

The vehicle load must be in accordance with

the vehicle's normal load conditions. The

load should be at least 40% of the vehicle's

admissible load.

-

For a vehicle combination (truck with trailer,

or tractor with semi-trailer), the alignment of

the total vehicle combination must be

checked. A misaligned trailer or semi-trailer

can cause the combination to become

directionally unstable.

-

Before measuring, the following points

should be checked:

-

tyre pressure

-

spring opening of the spring

-

play of the axle suspension.

Note:

If a deviation is found, it should be corrected

before the measurement is taken.

-

The work should be carried out very

precisely. The wheel alignment (the angle of

the wheel in relation to the central axis of the

chassis) should be calculated in millimetres

per metre.

This wheel position is calculated by dividing the

difference (in millimetres) in the readings on the

measuring boards (a - b in the drawing below) by

the distance (in metres) between the measuring

boards (L in the drawing).

Note:

The drawing shows the alignment equipment,

with a loose projector and measuring boards

being hung in the chassis.

1.

Drive the vehicle in a straight line to the test

location, so that the steered trailing swivel

axle is blocked in centre position.

2.

Remove the fuses from the EMAS system,

so that the steered trailing swivel axle

remains blocked in centre position.

3.

Place the vehicle on the turning plates.

4.

Place chocks before and behind the non-

steerable wheels.

Block the vehicle so that it cannot

slide off the turning plates.

5.

Install the alignment equipment.

Calibrate the alignment equipment, if

possible.

Consult the alignment equipment manual

and follow the instructions given there.

6.

Check the axle position of the driven axle

relative to the vehicle's centre line. Correct

the axle position if it is outside the permitted

value.

7.

Check the toe of the steered trailing swivel

axle. Correct the toe if it is outside the

permitted value, see 'Technical data'.

8.

Check the wheel position (A) of the left wheel

of the steered trailing swivel axle in relation

to the axle position of the driven axle. Correct

the wheel position if it is outside the

permitted value.

9.

Check the wheel position (B) of the left wheel

of the steered trailing swivel axle in relation

to the centre line of the vehicle. Adjust the

wheel position if it is outside the permitted

value.

Note:

If a large deviation is measured, the cause

should be traced. The deviation could, for

example, have been caused by a collision.

10. Fit the fuses to the EMAS system.

Adjusting alignment
1.

Remove the clamping bracket bolt (3) from

the ball joint (2).

2.

Lengthen or shorten the piston rod (1) on the

steering cylinder.

3.

Check that the piston rod (1) on the steering

cylinder is not unscrewed too much from the

ball joint (2). The clamping bracket should

always fully engage the screw thread of the

piston rod (see drawing).

4.

Thoroughly clean and check the clamping

bracket bolt. A corroded or damaged bolt

must be replaced.

Replace the self-locking nut.

5.

Tighten the clamping bracket bolt to the

specified tightening torque. See 'Technical

data'.

6.

After tightening the clamping bracket, check

the wheel alignment once again.

7.

Calibrate the EMAS system.

2.6 INSPECTION OF THE STEERING BALL JOINT

Inspection of the steering ball joint screw
thread with a self-locking nut
1.

Check the ball end thread for damage before

fitting a new self-locking nut.

2.

To do so, hand-tighten a new non-self-

locking nut on the ball end.

3.

If the new nut cannot be fully hand-screwed

onto the entire thread, the ball end must be

replaced.

Fitting a new self-locking nut to a

ball end with a damaged thread may

lead to dangerous situations.

Inspection of locking with castle nut
1.

If a castle nut is fitted, check that the locking

devices are present and undamaged.

Inspection of dust cover
1.

Check that the steering ball joint dust cover

or seal is not damaged. Replace the steering

ball joint if damaged.
