Removal Procedure

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained

during performance of inspection, maintenance, test-

ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to

collect the fluid with suitable containers before open-

ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-

nent containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar

Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies

suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar

products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and

mandates.

Retaining Ring Pliers

Start By:

a. Remove the relief valve. Refer to Disassembly and

Assembly, “Relief Valve (Transmission Hydraulic

Control) - Remove”.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before

you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior

of the components should be thoroughly cleaned.

This will help to prevent dirt from entering the

internal mechanism. Precision components can

be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform

disassembly procedures on a clean work surface.

Keep components covered and protected at all times.

adjustment screw (7). Remove bolts (6) and cover

(5).

7. Remove slug (16).

8. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring

(15). Remove retainer (14), spring (13), and ball

(12).

Retaining Ring Pliers

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before

assembly, thoroughly clean all parts in cleaning

fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Do not use wiping

cloths or rags to dry parts. Lint may be deposited

on the parts which may cause trouble. Inspect all

parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new

parts for replacement. Dirt and other contaminants

can damage the precision component. Perform

assembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep

components covered and protected at all times.

Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and

the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the

components, if necessary.

1. Install ball (12), spring (13), and retainer (14). Use

Tooling (A) in order to install retaining ring (15).

2. Install slug (16).

4. Install spring (10), O-ring seal (9), and load piston

(8).

5. Install adjustment screw (7) to the original location.

Install cover (5) and bolts (6). Tighten bolts (6) to

a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).
