No. 220 Incorrect indication (or no indication) of fuel gauge
Malfunction Cause
Solution
1) Malfunction of power supply
circuit for instrument
1) Open fuse unit and check if CLUSTER(10A) AM1(30A) and
MAIN(80A) in fuse unit is broken; replace if necessary;
2) Place igniting switch to ON and measure voltage of instrument
connector B4 with voltage grade of multi-meter; the voltage should be
equal to the voltage of battery (standard voltage: 12V); measure
resistance of instrument connectors B7 and B8 to bond strap; the
resistance should be zero because B7 and B8 are bond straps of
instrument; if power supply voltage for B4 and resistances for B7 and
B8 are different from normal values, circuit should be checked and
repaired or fuse should be replaced;
2) Malfunction of stabilizing circuit
for fuel gauge
3) Dismantle instrument panel and then switch on igniting switch;
check output voltage between “+12V” and “-“ terminals of instrument
stabilizer for normal 11.5 – 12.5 V; if the voltage is lower than 11.5 V
or higher than 12.5 V or no voltage output, the stabilizer should be
replaced;
3) Fuel gauge in poor operation
4) Check fuel gauge condition: disconnect sensor of fuel gauge and
open igniting switch; using external resistor instead of resistor of
sensor for detection and identification, the fuel gauge will indicate out
of fuel with 110Ω resistor, one-fourth tank of fuel with 75Ω resistor,
half tank of fuel with 40Ω resistor, three-fourth tank of fuel with 20Ω
resistor and full of fuel with 3Ω resistor; if the results indicated by fuel
gauge are different from above values, fuel gauge or instrument
assembly should be replaced;
4) Short-circuit or break of
connecting wire between fuel
gauge sensor and combined
instrument
5) Disconnect fuel sensor and combined instrument; measure
resistance of connecting wire between fuel gauge sensor and
combined instrument with multi-meter and the standard is 0 Ohm; the
resistance between the wire and bond strap should be infinite as
break status; otherwise the wire is short-circuit or broken and should
be replaced;
5) Floater of fuel sensor is blocked
6) Floater of fuel sensor is blocked: check if there has been crash on
bottom of tank and if there is bulge or other object which prevents
floater from moving upward and downward, so that the fuel gauge is
incorrect; if yes, clear, repair or replace it;
Incorrect indication
(or no indication) of
fuel gauge
6) Fuel gauge sensor in poor
operation
7) Check fuel gauge sensor with resistance grade of multi-meter: the
resistance measured by multi-meter should be 3±2Ω when floater of
sensor is at full position, and 32.5±3Ω for middle (1/2 position) of tank,
110±6Ω for out of fuel position; if measured results for floater of
sensor are different from standard values, fuel gauge sensor should
be replaced;
