Using the kick sensor (vehi-
cles with Hands Free Power
Sliding Doors)

The Hands Free Power Sliding
Door enables automatic opening
and closing of the power sliding
door by putting your foot under
the portion with a label on the
rocker moulding and moving it
away from the rocker moulding.
When operating the Hands Free
Power Sliding Door, make sure
that the front door (the same
side of the sliding door you
open) is closed, the kick sensor
operation is enabled (

P.112)

and you are carrying an elec-
tronic key.

1.9 mph (3 km/h).

The power sliding door system is

enabled.

The power sliding door is

unlocked. (Except for the wireless

remote control operation or smart

key system operation.)

The sliding door child-protector

lock is not set. (However, the

switch for the front occupants and

the outside handle still operate the

power sliding door.)

Power sliding doors

The power sliding doors can be

opened/closed manually when the

power sliding door function is can-

celed with the main switch.

If the sensor detects jamming of a

person or an object while the

power sliding door is automatically

opening/closing, a buzzer will

beep and the power sliding door

will stop after reversing approxi-

mately 3.9 in. (10 cm). When the

power sliding door is operated

again after the stop, the door will

be operated as follows.

To operate the door reversely:
• Pull the outside door handle, or

press the switch of the sliding door

 is attached to the front

edge of the power sliding door. If

any object obstructs the power slid-

ing door when closing, the power

sliding door will stop after reversing

approximately 3.9 in. (10 cm).

Sliding door reserve lock func-

tion

This function is a function which

reserves locking of all doors before-

hand, when the power sliding door

is open.
When the following procedure is

performed, all the doors except the

power sliding door are locked and

then power sliding door will also be

locked at the same time it is closed.

1

Close all doors, except the

power sliding door.

2

During the power sliding door

closing operation, lock the doors

using the smart key system from

the front doors (

P.132) or the

wireless remote control.

(

P.132)

A buzzer sounds and the emer-

gency flashers flash to indicate that

all the doors have been closed and

locked.

If the electronic key is placed

inside the vehicle after starting a

close operation via the door

reserve lock function, the elec-

tronic key may become locked

inside the vehicle. Make sure to

always carry the electronic key on

your person.

If the power sliding door does not

fully close due to the operation of

the jam protection function, etc.,

while the sliding door is automati-

cally closing after a door reserve

lock operation is performed, the

door reserve lock function is can-

celed and all the doors will unlock.

Before leaving the vehicle, make

sure that all the doors are closed

and locked.

Power sliding door brake func-

tion

When the power sliding door

detects an abnormality and stops

operating, power sliding door brake

function may be activated. When

brake function is activated, door

movement is restricted by the brake

and motion may appear to be not

smooth. This is not malfunction.

Move the door to fully closed posi-

tion to reset the system and normal

power sliding door function will

resume.

Sliding door closer

In the event that the sliding door is

left slightly open, the sliding door

closer will automatically close it to

the fully closed position.

Sliding door closer

In the event that the sliding door

is left slightly open, the sliding

door closer will automatically

close it to the fully closed posi-

tion. It takes several seconds

before the sliding door closer

begins to operate. Be careful

not to catch fingers or anything

else in the sliding door, as this

may cause bone fractures or

other serious injuries.

Use caution when using the

sliding door closer. The sliding

door closer operates even when

the power sliding door system is

canceled.

Power sliding doors

Observe the following precautions

when the power sliding door sys-

tem is enabled. Failure to do so

may cause death or serious

injury.

Do not get in and out of the

vehicle while the power sliding

door is being operated.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors

WARNING

When using the door handle to

open or close the power sliding

door, remove your hand from

the door handle immediately

after starting power sliding door

operation. If you leave your

hand on the door handle during

operation, your hand, fingers,

wrist etc. may be subjected to

an excessive amount of force.

Check the safety of the sur-

rounding area to make sure

there are no obstacles or any-

thing that could cause any of

your belongings to get caught.

If anyone is in the vicinity, make

sure they are safe and let them

know that the sliding door is

about to open or close. Also, do

not operate the power sliding

door if anyone inside or outside

the vehicle is leaning against

the vehicle in the area around

the sliding door.

If the power sliding door system

is disabled with the main switch

while the sliding door is operat-

ing automatically, the automatic

operation is stopped. The slid-

ing door then has to be oper-

ated manually. Take extra care

when on an incline, as the slid-

ing door may open or close

unexpectedly.

If the operating conditions of the

power sliding door are no longer

met, a buzzer may sound and

the sliding door may stop open-

ing or closing. The sliding door

then has to be operated manu-

ally. Take extra care when on

an incline, as the sliding door

may open or close abruptly.

On an incline, a sliding door

may close by itself after it opens

automatically. Make sure the

sliding door is fully open and

secure.

In the following situations, the

power sliding door may detect

an abnormality and automatic

operation may be stopped. In

this case, the sliding door has to

be operated manually. Take

extra care when on an incline,

as the sliding door may open or

close abruptly.

• When the sliding door contacts

an obstacle

• When the 12-volt battery volt-

age suddenly drops, such as

when the power switch is turned

to ON or the hybrid system is

started during automatic opera-

tion

Do not attach any accessories

other than genuine Toyota parts

to the power sliding door. The

power sliding door may not

operate, causing itself to mal-

function, or the power sliding

door may close again after it is

opened.

When the sliding door child-pro-

tector locks are set, make sure

to disable the power sliding door

system with the main switch in

order to totally disable the sys-

tem.

Hands Free Power Sliding

Doors (if equipped)

Observe the following precautions

when operating the Hands Free

Power Sliding Door. Failure to do

so may cause death or serious

injury.

Check the safety of the sur-

rounding area to make sure

there are no obstacles or any-

thing that could cause any of

your belongings to get caught.

Do not leave the electronic key

within the effective range

(detection area) of the power

sliding door.

NOTICE

Sliding door

Make sure magazines are not

bent or protruding from the sliding

door pockets. Do not insert any-

thing too big so that the shape of

the sliding door pockets is dis-

torted. Such objects may obstruct

the opening/closing of the sliding

doors, damage the sliding door

pockets or the vehicle body, and

may result in a malfunction.

Sliding door closer

Do not apply excessive force to

the sliding door while the sliding

door closer is operating.

The sliding door closer may not

operate when you repeat open-

ing/closing in a short period of

time. To operate again, open

the power sliding door once and

then close after a while.

To prevent damage to your

vehicle

Do not apply excessive force

when the sliding door is operat-

ing.

Do not place your hand or foot

near door hinges or rollers when

the sliding door is operating.

Avoid forcibly opening the left

side sliding door fully when the

fuel filler door is opened. Other-

wise, the fuel filler door may be

damaged.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors

The power sliding door system
can be enabled/disabled by
using the power sliding door

NOTICE

Take care not to damage the

sensors (installed on the front

edge of the power sliding door)

with a knife or other sharp

object.

Make sure there is nothing in

the doorway before closing.

Do not close the sliding door by

applying the brakes. Doing so

could cause the sliding door to

be damaged.

Hands Free Power Sliding

Doors precautions (if

equipped)

The kick sensors are located

behind the portions with labels on

the rocker mouldings. Observe

the following to ensure that the

Hands Free Power Sliding Door

function operates properly:

Keep the portions with labels on

the rocker mouldings clean at all

times.

If the portions with labels on the

rocker mouldings are dirty or

covered with snow or mud, the

kick sensors may not operate.

In this situation, clean off the dirt

or snow, move the vehicle from

the current position and then

check if the kick sensors oper-

ate.

If they do not operate, have the

vehicle inspected by your

Toyota dealer.

Do not apply coatings that have

a rain clearing (hydrophilic)

effect, or other coatings, to the

portions with labels on the

rocker mouldings.

Do not park the vehicle near

objects that may move and con-

tact portions with labels on the

rocker mouldings, such as

grass or trees.

If the vehicle has been parked

for a while near objects that

may move and contact the por-

tions with labels on the rocker

mouldings, such as grass or

trees, the kick sensors may not

operate. In this situation, move

the vehicle from the current

position and then check if the

kick sensors operate. If they do

not operate, have the vehicle

inspected by your Toyota

dealer.

Do not subject the kick sensors

or their surrounding areas to a

strong impact.

If the kick sensors or their sur-

rounding areas have been sub-

jected to a strong impact, the

kick sensors may not operate

properly. If the kick sensors do

not operate in the following situ-

ations, have the vehicle

inspected by your Toyota

dealer.

• The kick sensors or their sur-

rounding areas have been sub-

jected to a strong impact.

• The portions with labels on the

rocker mouldings are scratched

or damaged.

Do not disassemble the rocker

mouldings.

tions. Failure to do so may result

in death or serious injury.

Do not allow children to play in

the luggage compartment.

If a child is accidentally locked

in the luggage compartment,

they could get heat exhaustion

or other injuries.

Do not allow a child to open or

close the back door.

Doing so may cause the back

door to operate unexpectedly,

or cause the child’s hands,

head, or neck to be caught by

the closing back door.

Caution while driving

Keep the back door closed

while driving.

If the back door is left open, it

Vehicles without power back

door: The back door may sud-

denly shut if it is not opened

fully. It is more difficult to open

or close the back door on an

incline than on a level surface,

so beware of the back door

unexpectedly opening or closing

by itself. Make sure that the

back door is fully open and

secure before using the luggage

compartment.

Vehicles with power back door:

The back door may suddenly

shut if it is not opened fully,

while on a steep incline. Make

sure that the back door is

secured before using the lug-

gage compartment.

When closing the back door,

Doing so may cause hands to

be caught or the back door

damper stay (vehicles without

power back door) or back door

spindle (vehicles with power

back door) to break, causing an

accident.

Do not attach a heavy acces-

sory part to the back door. If a

bicycle carrier or similar heavy

object is attached to the back

door, it may suddenly shut

again after being opened, caus-

ing someone’s hands, head or

neck to be caught and injured.

system is canceled.

Power back door

Observe the following precautions

when operating the power back

door.

Failure to do so may cause death

or serious injury.

Check the safety of the sur-

rounding area to make sure

there are no obstacles or any-

thing that could cause any of

your belongings to get caught.

If anyone is in the vicinity, make

sure they are safe and let them

know that the back door is

about to open or close.

If the power back door system is

disabled while the back door is

operating automatically, the

automatic operation is stopped.

The back door then has to be

operated manually. Take extra

care when on an incline, as the

back door may open or close

unexpectedly.

If the operating conditions of the

power back door are no longer

met, a buzzer may sound and

the back door may stop opening

Make sure that there is no ice

between the back door and

frame that would prevent move-

ment of the back door. Operat-

ing the power back door when

excessive load is present on the

back door may cause a mal-

function.

Do not apply excessive force to

the back door while the power

back door is operating.

Take care not to damage the

sensors (installed on the right

and left edges of the power

back door) with a knife or other

sharp object. If the sensor is

disconnected, the power back

door will not close automati-

cally.

Close & lock function

When closing the power back

door using the close & lock func-

tion, a different buzzer than the

normal one will sound before the

operation begins.
To check that the operation has

started correctly, check that a dif-

ferent buzzer than the normal one

has sounded.
Additionally, when the power back

door is fully closed and locked,

operation signals will indicate that

all of the doors have been locked.
Before leaving the vehicle, make

sure that the operation signals

have operated and that all of the

doors are locked.

Hands Free Power Back Door

precautions (if equipped)

The kick sensor is located behind

lower center part of the rear

bumper. Observe the following to

ensure that the Hands Free

Power Back Door function oper-

ates properly:

Keep the lower center part of

the rear bumper clean at all

times.

If the lower center part of the

rear bumper is dirty or covered

with snow or mud, the kick sen-

sor may not operate. In this situ-

ation, clean off the dirt or snow,

move the vehicle from the cur-

rent position and then check if

the kick sensor operates.

If it does not operate, have the

vehicle inspected by your

Toyota dealer.

Do not apply coatings that have

a rain clearing (hydrophilic)

effect, or other coatings, to the

lower center part of the rear

bumper.

Do not park the vehicle near

objects that may move and con-

tact the lower center part of the

rear bumper, such as grass or

trees.

If the vehicle has been parked

for a while near objects that

may move and contact the

lower center part of the rear

bumper, such as grass or trees,

the kick sensor may not oper-

ate. In this situation, move the

vehicle from the current position

and then check if the kick sen-

sor operates. If it does not oper-

ate, have the vehicle inspected

by your Toyota dealer.

Conditions affecting operation

The smart key system uses weak

radio waves. In the following situa-

tions, the communication between

the electronic key and the vehicle

may be affected, preventing the

smart key system, wireless remote

control and immobilizer system from

operating properly.

(Ways of coping:

P.504)

When the electronic key battery is

When other wireless key (that

emits radio waves) is being used

nearby

When carrying the electronic key

together with the following devices

that emit radio waves

• Portable radio, cellular phone,

cordless phone or other wireless

communication devices

• Another vehicle’s electronic key or

a wireless key that emits radio

waves

• Personal computers or personal

digital assistants (PDAs)

• Digital audio players

tion areas), the system may not

operate properly in the following

cases:

• The electronic key is too close to

the window or outside door han-

dle, near the ground, or in a high

place when the doors are locked

or unlocked.

• The electronic key is on the instru-

ment panel, or floor, or in the door

pockets or glove box when the

hybrid system is started or power

switch modes are changed.

Do not leave the electronic key on

top of the instrument panel or near

the door pockets when exiting the

vehicle. Depending on the radio

wave reception conditions, it may

be detected by the antenna out-

side the cabin and the door will

become lockable from the outside,

possibly trapping the electronic

key inside the vehicle.

As long as the electronic key is

within the effective range, the

doors may be locked or unlocked

by anyone. However, only the

doors detecting the electronic key

can be used to unlock the vehicle.

Even if the electronic key is not

inside the vehicle, it may be possi-

ble to start the hybrid system if the

electronic key is near the window.

The doors may unlock if a large

amount of water splashes on the

door handle, such as in the rain or

in a car wash when the electronic

key is within the effective range.

(The doors will automatically be

locked after approximately 60 sec-

onds if the doors are not opened

and closed.)

If the wireless remote control is

used to lock the doors when the

electronic key is near the vehicle,

there is a possibility that the door

may not be unlocked by the entry

function. (Use the wireless remote

control to unlock the doors.)

Touching the door lock sensor

while wearing gloves may delay or

prevent lock operation. Remove

the gloves and touch the lock sen-

sor again.

When the lock operation is per-

formed using the lock sensor, rec-

ognition signals will be shown up

to two consecutive times. After

this, no recognition signals will be

given.

If the door handle becomes wet

while the electronic key is within

the effective range, the door may

lock and unlock repeatedly. In that

case, follow the following correc-

tion procedures to wash the vehi-

cle:

• Place the electronic key in a loca-

tion 6 ft. (2 m) or more away from

the vehicle. (Take care to ensure

that the key is not stolen.)

• Set the electronic key to battery-

saving mode to disable the smart

key system. (

P.166)

If the electronic key is inside the

vehicle and a door handle

becomes wet during a car wash, a

message may be shown on the

multi-information display and a

buzzer will sound outside the vehi-

cle. To turn off the alarm, lock all

the doors.

The lock sensor may not work

properly if it comes into contact

with ice, snow, mud, etc. Clean

the lock sensor and attempt to

operate it again, or use the lock

sensor on the lower part of the

door handle.

A sudden approach to the effec-

tive range or door handle may pre-

vent the doors from being

unlocked. In this case, return the

door handle to the original position

and check that the doors unlock

before pulling the door handle

again.

If there is another electronic key in

the detection area, it may take

slightly longer to unlock the doors

after the door handle is gripped.

When the vehicle is not driven

for extended periods

Vehicles with entry function: To

prevent theft of the vehicle, do not

leave the electronic key within 6 ft.

3-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors

To operate the system properly

Make sure to carry the electronic

key when operating the system. Do

not get the electronic key too close

to the vehicle when operating the

system from the outside of the vehi-

cle.
Depending on the position and hold-

ing condition of the electronic key,

the key may not be detected cor-

rectly and the system may not oper-

ate properly. (The alarm may go off

accidentally, or the door lock pre-

vention may not operate.)

If the smart key system does

not operate properly

If the doors cannot be locked or

unlocked, perform the following.

• Bring the electronic key close to

the door handle and perform a

lock or unlock operation.

• Use the wireless remote control.
If the doors cannot be locked or

unlocked by perform the above, use

the mechanical key. (

P.504)

However, if the mechanical key is

used while the alarm system is set,

the warning will sound. (

the driver to lose control of the
vehicle.

When adjusting the seat posi-

tion or the ottoman (vehicles

with Ottoman seats)

Make sure to leave enough space

around the feet so as not to get

them caught.

When using the ottoman

(vehicles with Ottoman seats)

Do not sit on the ottoman. Seat

belts may not be properly worn

which may result in death or

serious injury.

Stow the ottoman when you get

in and out of the vehicle or when

the ottoman is not in use to

avoid stumbling over it.

Do not use the ottoman feature

when the vehicle is in motion.

The ottoman feature should

only be used when the vehicle

is stationary. If the ottoman fea-

ture is in use during an accident

the lap belt may slide past the

hips. This could also result in
