Test Note:

All symptoms listed above are diagnosed using the same tests.

The title for the tests will be P0031-O2 SENSOR HEATER
CIRCUIT LOW 1/1.

When Monitored and Set Condition:

P0031-O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT LOW 1/1

When Monitored:

Battery voltage above 10.6 volts, ECT below a certain Temp but within

a set Temperature difference of Battery temp sensor.

Set Condition:

If voltage is lower than a specified voltage at start of test.

P0032-O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT HIGH 1/1

When Monitored:

Battery voltage above 10.6 volts, ECT below a certain Temp but within

a set Temperature difference of Battery temp sensor.

Set Condition:

If voltage is Higher than a specified voltage at start of test.

P0037-O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT LOW 1/2

When Monitored:

Battery voltage above 10.6 volts, ECT below a certain Temp but within

a set Temperature difference of Battery temp sensor.

Set Condition:

If voltage is lower than a specified voltage at start of test.

P0038-O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT HIGH 1/2

When Monitored:

Battery voltage above 10.6 volts, ECT below a certain Temp but within

a set Temperature difference of Battery temp sensor.

Set Condition:

If voltage is Higher than a specified voltage at start of test.

P0051-O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT LOW 2/1

When Monitored:

Battery voltage above 10.6 volts, ECT below a certain Temp but within

a set Temperature difference of Battery temp sensor.

Set Condition:

If voltage is lower than a specified voltage at start of test.

P0052-O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT HIGH 2/1

When Monitored:

Battery voltage above 10.6 volts, ECT below a certain Temp but within

a set Temperature difference of Battery temp sensor.

Set Condition:

If voltage is Higher than a specified voltage at start of test.

Monitor the O2 Heater Voltage for 5 minutes
Did the go down to close to zero?

NOTE: Check for contaminates that may have damaged the O2 Sensor:
contaminated fuel, unapproved silicone, oil and coolant.
WARNING: WHEN THE ENGINE IS OPERATING, DO NOT STAND IN A
DIRECT LINE WITH THE FAN. DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS NEAR THE
PULLEYS, BELTS OR FAN. DO NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING.
NOTE: The conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The
following list may help in identifying the intermittent condition.
With the engine running at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRBIII

t

parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for param-
eter values to change and/or a DTC to set.
Review the DRBIII

t Freeze Frame information. If possible, try to duplicate the

conditions under which the DTC was set.
Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may apply.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or
partially broken wires.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed
out, or corroded terminals.
Were any of the above conditions present?

All

Yes

→

Repair as necessary

No

→

Test Complete.

Disconnect the O2 sensor harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the O2 Heater element circuit in the O2 sensor connec-
tor(component side).
Is the resistance between 4.3 and 5.3 ohms at 70° F(21.1°C)?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Replace the O2 sensor.

Disconnect the O2 sensor harness connector.
Measure the voltage between the fused ignition circuit and ground.
Is the voltage above 12.0 volts?

All

Yes

→

Go To

5

No

→

Repair fused ignition feed circuit.

Disconnect the O2 sensor harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the heater control circuit.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Repair open or high resistance in the controlled ground circuit.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 2.

If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair.

Repair

Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accor-
dance with the Service Information.

Turn the ignition on.
With the DRBIII

t, read DTC’s.

Is the Good Trip display and equal to zero?

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the Ambient Temperature Sensor harness connector.
Using a jumper wire, jumper across the Ambient Temperature Sensor harness
connector.
Turn the ignition on.
With the DRBIII

t, read the Ambient Temp sensor voltage.

Is the voltage below 1.0 volt?

All

Yes

→

Replace the Ambient Temperature Sensor.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5.

No

→

Go To

NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads meet the terminals in the connector and
that there is good terminal to wire connection.
NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads are connected for positive polarity
Perform a voltage drop test by backprobing between the Sensor ground circuit at the
Ambient Temperature Sensor harness connector and PCM harness connector.
Start the engine.
Allow the engine to idle.
Is the voltage below 0.10 volt?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Repair the high resistance in the Sensor ground circuit.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5.
