Symptom:

P0122-THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE LOW

When Monitored and Set Condition:

P0122-THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE LOW

When Monitored:

With the ignition on and battery voltage above 10.4 volts.

Set Condition:

The throttle position sensor signal voltage is below 0.1 volt.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

INTERMITTENT CONDITION

5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN

TP SENSOR IDLE VOLTAGE

VERIFY TP SENSOR OPERATION

5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

TP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

TP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

PCM - 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT

PCM - TP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT

ACTION

APPLICABILITY

Turn the ignition on.
With the DRB, read PCM DTCs.
Is the Starts Since Set counter displayed and equal to 0?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Go To

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Turn the ignition on.
Measure the voltage of the 5-volt Supply circuit from the PCM in APP Sensor harness
connector cavity 2.
Is the voltage above 4.5 volts?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Turn the ignition on.
With the DRB, read the TP Sensor voltage with the accelerator pedal in the at rest
position.
Does the DRB read above 1.0 volt?

All

Yes

→

Replace the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor in accordance with
the Service Information.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

No

→

Go To

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
Measure the resistance between ground and the TP Sensor Signal circuit.
Is the resistance above 100 kohms?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Repair the TP Sensor Signal circuit for a short to ground.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
Measure the resistance between the TP Sensor Signal circuit cavity 3 and the Sensor
Ground circuits at cavities 4 and 8 of the APP Sensor harness connector.
Is the resistance above 100 kohms for both measurements?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Repair the TP Sensor Signal and Sensor Ground circuits for a
short together.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair.

All

Repair

Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accor-
dance with the Service Information.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
Measure the resistance of the 5-volt Supply circuit between the PCM and APP Sensor
harness connectors.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?

All

Yes

→

Go To

8

No

→

Repair the 5-volt Supply circuit between the PCM and APP
Sensor harness connectors for an open.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
Measure the resistance between ground and the 5-volt Supply circuit from the PCM.
Is the resistance below 100 kohms?

All

Yes

→

Repair the 5-volt Supply circuit from the PCM for a short to
ground.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

No

→

Go To

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
Measure the resistance between the 5-volt Supply circuit cavity 2 and the Sensor
Ground circuits at cavities 4 and 8 of the APP Sensor harness connector.
Is the resistance below 100 kohms for any of the measurements?

All

Yes

→

Repair the 5-volt Supply circuit from the PCM for a short to the
Sensor Ground circuit.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

No

→

Go To

If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair.

All

Repair

Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accor-
dance with the Service Information.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

Turn the ignition on.
With the DRB, read the TP Sensor volts.
With the accelerator pedal in the idle position, slowly depress the accelerator pedal
until the pedal is fully depressed.
NOTE: The TP Sensor volts should increase smoothly as the pedal is
depressed.
Does the voltage increase smoothly with the accelerator pedal travel?

All

Yes

→

Go To

No

→

Replace the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor in accordance with
the Service Information.
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

APPLICABILITY

WARNING: WHEN THE ENGINE IS OPERATING, DO NOT STAND IN A
DIRECT LINE WITH THE FAN. DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS NEAR THE
PULLEYS, BELTS OR FAN. DO NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING.
NOTE: The conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The
following list may help in identifying the intermittent condition.
With the engine running at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRB
parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for param-
eter values to change and/or a DTC to set.
Review the DTC When Monitored and Set Conditions. If possible, try to duplicate the
conditions under which the DTC was set.
Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may apply.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or
partially broken wires.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed
out, or corroded terminals.
Were any of the above conditions present?

All

Yes

→

Repair as necessary
Perform ROAD TEST VERIFICATION - VER-2.

No

→

Test Complete.
