Symptom:

P1735-INADEQUATE ELEMENT VOLUME 4C

When Monitored and Set Condition:

P1735-INADEQUATE ELEMENT VOLUME 4C

When Monitored:

Whenever the engine is running. The 4C volume is updated during a

3-4 upshift with throttle angle between 5 and 54 degrees. Trans temp must be at least 110
degrees F.

Set Condition:

When the 4C volume falls below 5.

NOTE: Low fluid level can be the cause of many transmission problems. If
the fluid level is low locate and repair the leak then check and adjust the
fluid level per the service information.
NOTE: Always perform diagnostics with a fully charged battery to avoid
false symptoms.
With the DRBIII

t, read the engine DTC’s. Check and repair all engine DTC’s prior

to performing transmission symptom diagnostics.
With the DRBIII

t, read Transmission DTC’s. Record all DTC’s and 1 Trip Failures.

NOTE: Diagnose 1 Trip Failures as a fully matured DTC.
Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors.
Repair as necessary.
Perform the Shift Lever Position Test. If the test does not pass, refer to Symptom test
for P0705 Check Shifter Signal.
For Gear Ratio DTC’s, check and record all CVI’s.
Most DTC’s set on start up but some must be set by driving the vehicle such that all
diagnostic monitors have run.
Note: Verify flash level of transmission controller. Some problems are
corrected by software upgrades to the transmission controller.
NOTE: Check for applicable TSB’s related to the problem.
Perform this procedure prior to Symptom diagnosis.

Note: Check and adjust oil level as necessary. The transmission oil temper-
ature must be hot in order to accurately check the fluid. Adding fluid to a
cold transmission may result in overfilling the transmission.
With the DRBIII

t, check and write down the 4C volume.

With the DRBIII

t, erase DTC’s

Perform at least 10 3-4 upshifts with the throttle between 5 and 54 degrees. The
transmission temperature must be at least 110 degrees.
With the DRBIII

t, observe the 4C volume.

Is the current 4C volume below 10?

The transmission must be at operating temperature prior to checking fluid level.
Adjusting fluid level on a cold transmission will result in an overfilled transmission.
Check the transmission fluid level per the service information.
Note: The transmission must be hot when checking oil level. When the
temperature is below 10 degrees C (50 degrees F). it is possible that no oil
will show on the dipstick, even though the transmission has an adequate fill
level when warm.
Is the fluid level OK?

Low fluid level can be the cause of many transmission problems.

Perform 45RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - VER
1.

The transmission has an internal problem and must be replaced or repaired.
If the transmission is to be repaired, pay special attention to the mechanical
components related to the 4 clutch. A deteriorated return spring or a dislocated snap
ring could cause this problem.
If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair.

Replace transmission or repair internal transmission problem as
required per current warranty policy.
Perform 45RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - VER
1.

Perform eight learnable starts. A learnable start is defined as follows: Start engine.
From a standstill, accelerate lightly to 50 MPH, then brake lightly to a stop. Turn off
engine.
With the DRBIII

t, observe and record CVI’s.

With the DRBIII

t, perform a battery disconnect.

With the DRBIII

t, Observe CVI’s

Are any of the CVI’s less than 5 or are they different than before the battery
disconnect?

P1736-GEAR RATIO ERROR IN 2ND PRIME

When Monitored and Set Condition:

P1736-GEAR RATIO ERROR IN 2ND PRIME

When Monitored:

The transmission gear ratio is monitored continuously while the

transmission is in gear.

Set Condition:

If the ratio of the Input RPM to the Output RPM does not match the

current gear ratio.
