See Fig. 133 . Remove spark plugs. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. 
See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

Removal & Installation (4.2L Coil Pack) 

Coil pack is located on right side valve cover. Disconnect harness connector. Disconnect spark plug wires. 
Remove coil bolts and coil. See Fig. 134 .

KNOCK SENSOR 

See KNOCK SENSOR under SENSORS & SWITCHES. 

SPARK PLUGS 

Removal & Installation (4.6L & 5.4L) 

Remove ignition coils. See IGNITION COILS . Remove spark plugs. To install, reverse removal procedure. 
Tighten spark plugs to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

NOTE:

Allow engine to cool before removing spark plugs. There is no authorized repair 
for spark plug hole threads. Replace cylinder head if threads are damaged. If 
spark plug removal and installation is primarily an unbolt and bolt-on 
procedure, only a torque specification is furnished. See TORQUE 
SPECIFICATIONS .

EMISSIONS SYSTEMS & SUBSYSTEMS

EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 

AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE 

After servicing evaporative system components, perform leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS 
SYSTEM LEAK TEST
 under SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE EMISSION) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 
CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. Perform Evaporative Emission Running Loss Monitor Repair 
Verification Drive Cycle. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION LEAK CHECK MONITOR under 
DIAGNOSTIC MONITORS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. 

CHARCOAL CANISTER 

Removal & Installation (Blackwood & F150) 

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the canister vent solenoid 

electrical connector. Remove the canister bracket bolts. See Fig. 135 and Fig. 136 . Disconnect the 
canister vent solenoid hose assembly. Lower the canister and bracket.  

2. Disconnect the hose. Disconnect the Evaporative (EVAP) emissions canister purge outlet tube. Remove 

the canister vent solenoid. See Fig. 84 . Remove the evaporative emissions canister.  

3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate all "O" rings with MERPOL(R) "O" ring Seal Lubricant 

before installation. Perform after repair procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE 

WARNING:

The evaporative emissions system contains fuel vapor and condensed 
fuel vapor. Although not present in large quantities, it still presents the 
danger of explosion or fire. Disconnect battery ground cable from battery 
to minimize the possibility of an electrical spark occurring, possibly 
causing a fire or explosion if fuel vapor or liquid fuel are present in the 
area. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. Do 
not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when 
working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable 
mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible 
personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal 
injury.

WARNING:

On Blackwood and Navigator models, The electrical power to the air 
suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing 
an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air 
suspension switch, located below the glove box in the lower right side of 
the passenger foot well. Failure to do so may result in shifting of the 
vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may 
result in personal injury.
