Principles of Operation

Power Door Locks

The central security module controls the power door lock and keyless entry system. The lock and unlock
operation is carried out by supplying ground to the central security module from the door lock control switch.
The normal path of the actuators is to ground through the central security module. The door lock control switch
will lock and unlock all doors by grounding the appropriate circuit to the central security module. The central
security module then supplies power to the appropriate common actuator circuit to lock or unlock all doors.

Keyless Entry

The keyless entry remote transmitter sends a frequency that is received by the central security module internal
antenna. Depending on the frequency received, the central security module will lock all doors or unlock the
driver door. If the unlock frequency is received again within five seconds of the first unlock, the central security
module will unlock all doors.

If the frequency received is for the panic button, the central security module will cycle ground to the park lamp
and horn. The park lamps and horn will continue to cycle until the panic button is pressed again or the ignition
switch is turned to the RUN position.

Inspection and Verification

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Refer to Fig. 18 :

4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC)

located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If
diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:

z

check that the program card is correctly installed.

z

check the connections to the vehicle.

z

check the ignition switch position.

5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool instruction.

6. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:

z

CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to MODULE
COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - F150
 .

z

NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Central security module, refer to MULTIFUNCTION
ELECTRONIC MODULE - F150
 .

z

SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the
continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the central security module.

7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the central security module Diagnostic Trouble

Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.

8. If DTCs are retrieved that are not found in the following central security module Diagnostic Trouble

Code (DTC) Index, refer to the master central security module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index in
MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE - F150 .

9. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
