the AFCM will default the fuel gauge message to zero and the gauge will read empty. The vehicle will continue 
to operate in the alternative fuel mode but the fuel level gauge will indicate empty. 

The fuel indication system on the CNG-equipped vehicles use an AFCM, compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel 
tank pressure sensor (FTPS), a fuel pump interceptor harness, and the gasoline fuel pump and fuel sensing 
circuitry. 

The fuel indication system on the LPG equipped vehicles use a fuel pump intercept harness, compuvalve, dash 
reset relay, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) sensor, compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel tank pressure sensor (FTPS) 
combined with the gasoline fuel pump and fuel sensing circuitry. 

INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION 

1. Verify the customer concern.  

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before 

proceeding to the next step.

4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the 

vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the 
vehicle: 

z

check that the program card or disk is correctly installed.  

z

check the connections to the vehicle.  

z

check the ignition switch position.  

5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating 

instruction.  

6. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: 

z

SCP+, SCP- or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to 
MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .  

z

No response/not equipped for the instrument cluster, GO to Pinpoint Test A.  

z

No response/not equipped for the compuvalve (liquid petroleum gas [LPG] only), GO to Pinpoint 
Test C.  

z

No response/not equipped for the alternative fuel control module (AFCM) (compressed natural gas 
[CNG] only), GO to Pinpoint Test B.  

z

System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the 
continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster.  

7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Alternative Fuel Control Module (AFCM) or 

the Compuvalve Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.  

8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
