3.6 REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING

Removing the wheel speed sensor ring
1.

Remove the wheel speed sensor.

2.

Remove the wheel hub unit from the axle 

journal.

3.

Make a notch in the side of the sensor ring, 

using a hammer and chisel. Make sure that 

the contact surface of the sensor ring to the 

wheel hub unit is not damaged in the 

process.

4.

Remove the wheel hub unit sensor ring.

Once removed, a sensor ring should 

not be re-installed. 

Installation of wheel speed sensor ring
1.

Check the contact surface of the sensor ring 

to the wheel hub unit for damage.

2.

Check the new sensor ring carefully for 

possible damage in transit.

3.

Fit a new sensor ring to the wheel hub unit 

using a press and flat plate.

4.

Check that the sensor ring makes good 

contact around the entire circumference.

5.

Install the wheel hub unit on the axle journal.

6.

Press the wheel speed sensor (2) against 

the sensor ring (1) by hand. While the vehicle 

is being driven, the air gap between the 

sensor and the sensor ring is adjusted.

If the sensor has no freedom of movement, 

remove, clean and refit it.

Never tap the sensor with a hammer. 

This may damage both the sensor 

and the sensor ring.

7.

Check the operation of the EBS or ABS 

system.

3.7 REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, WHEEL SPEED SENSOR

Removing the wheel speed sensor
1.

Remove the wheel speed sensor (2).

Installation of wheel speed sensor
1.

Clean the wheel speed sensor (2) and its 

holder (1). Replace the holder if necessary.

2.

Apply the specified anti-corrosion agent to 

the circumference of the wheel speed 

sensor. See 'Technical data'.

3.

Fit the wheel speed sensor. Press the wheel 

speed sensor against the back plate 

manually.

Never tap the sensor with a hammer. 

This may damage both the sensor 

and the sensor ring.

4.

Check the operation of the EBS or ABS 

system.

3.8 REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, FRONT AXLE SWIVEL AXLE

Removing the front axle swivel axle
1.

Remove the wheel hub unit.

2.

Remove the track rod and, if necessary, the 

swivel axle steering rod.

3.

Remove the cover (2).

4.

Remove the sealing plate (9).

5.

Remove the nut (3).

6.

Screw the hydraulic puller (B), special tool 

(DAF no. 0535891), into the king pin 

puller (C), special tool (DAF no. 0694767) 

for axles 150N, 152N and 156N or 

(DAF no. 1453127) for axles 182N and 

186N.

7.

Install the centring plate (E), special tool 

(DAF no. 0694823) for axles 150N, 152N 

and 156N or (DAF no. 1453134) 1453128 for 

axles 182N and 186N, on the bottom plate of 

the king pin puller.

8.

Position the appropriate pivot (D) for the axle 

type, special tool (DAF no. 0694919) for 

150N, 152N and 156N or (DAF no. 0694920) 

for the 182N and 186N axles to the king pin.

9.

Fit the king pin puller to the king pin.

10. Align the king pin puller at the top of the 

pivot (D). At the bottom, the centring pins of 

the centring plate (E) should fall into the 

swivel axle bolt holes.

11. Screw out the spindle (A) of the hydraulic 

puller (B) as far as possible.

12. Use a spanner to screw the hydraulic 

puller (B) into the king pin puller (C) as far as 

possible.

13. Screw the spindle (A) in until the king pin (8) 

is released. If the king pin (8) is not released 

after the spindle (A) is fully screwed in, the 

spindle (A) should be fully unscrewed and 

the hydraulic puller (B) screwed in further 

into the king pin puller (C). Then screw the 

spindle (A) back in.

Note:

If the king pin (8) is not released, it may be 

"knocked out". Tap with a hammer on the 

axle end stop which is not used.

14. Remove the king pin (8) from the swivel 

axle (6). Make sure that no needles fall from 

the needle bearings.

15. Remove the bearing bush (4) from the swivel 

axle. Make sure that no needles fall from the 

needle bearings.

16. Remove the swivel axle (6) from the axle 

end. Ensure that the adjusting ring (7) does 

not get lost.

Installation of front axle swivel axle
After a collision or when the camber angle is 

incorrect, the swivel axle should be magnaflux 

tested. If in doubt, always replace the swivel axle.

1.

Check the condition of the needle bearings.

2.

Check the bearing surfaces of the king 

pin (8) and the bearing bush (4) for grooves 

(see the arrows). A small needle puncture 

may be polished away using fine polishing 

paper. If in doubt, always replace the king 

pin (8) and the bearing bush (4).

3.

Check the thrust bearing for wear.

4.

Check the adjusting ring (7) for damage. If 

required, replace the adjusting ring (7).

5.

Check the contact surfaces of the swivel axle 

adjusting ring (7) and the axle end for 

damage.

6.

Fit the swivel axle (6) with a adjusting ring (7) 

of the same thickness as the original to the 

axle end.
