2. INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT

2.1 INSPECTION, FLOW CONTROL VALVE LUK VT72A, VT77 AND LF77

Note:

If there is sufficient space behind the steering

pump, this inspection can be carried out while the

steering pump is still attached to the engine.

1.

Clean the steering pump and the

surrounding area.

2.

Place a receptacle underneath the steering

pump.

3.

Remove the plug (5) at the back of the

steering pump (1).

4.

Remove the flow control valve (2) with the

spring (3) from the steering pump (1).

Mark the position of the valve in the valve

bore.

5.

Check both the valve and the valve bore for

impurities. Clean these parts if necessary.

6.

Apply plenty of clean steering oil to the valve

and fit the valve in the correct position

(hexagon facing outwards) in the bore.

7.

Check the valve for smooth operation. The

valve should not jam.

8.

Fit the spring (3) to the valve (2).

9.

Fit the plug (5), equipped with a new sealing

ring (4), to the pump. Tighten the plug to the

specified tightening torque, see 'Technical

data'.

10. Fill and bleed the steering gear hydraulic

system.

11. Take a test drive and check the plug for

leaks.

steering pump is still attached to the engine.

1.

Clean the steering pump and the

2.

Place a receptacle underneath the steering

pump.

3.

Remove the plug (1) at the back of the

steering pump.

4.

Remove the flow control valve (4) with the

spring (3) from the steering pump.

Mark the position of the valve in the valve

bore.

5.

Check both the valve (4) and the valve bore

for impurities. Clean these parts if

necessary.

6.

Apply plenty of clean steering oil to the valve

(4) and fit the valve in the correct position in

the bore.

7.

Check the valve for smooth operation. The

valve should not jam.

8.

Fit the spring (3) to the valve (4).

9.

Fit the plug (1), equipped with a new O-ring

(2), to the pump. Tighten the plug (1) to the

specified torque. See 'Technical data'.

10. Fill and bleed the steering gear hydraulic

system.

3. REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

3.1 REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, STEERING PUMP LUK VT77 AND LF77

Removing steering pump LUK VT77 and LF77

Note:

When replacing a worn steering pump, you are

advised to drain the steering oil fully, dismantle

the steering oil reservoir and clean it thoroughly,

and to replace the filter.

In extreme situations, the steering pump may

have been worn to such an extent that metal

pump parts have entered the steering box. Check

the steering box for internal wear using the test

case.

1.

Clean the line connections.

2.

Remove the wiring harness attachments that

are behind the pump.

3.

Place a receptacle underneath the steering

pump.

4.

Remove the lines from the steering pump

and plug the line and pump openings.

The steering oil filter is fitted in the return line,

which means that should any dirt enter, it will

immediately also enter the steering gear.

5.

Remove the attachment bolts and remove

the steering pump from the engine timing

gear.

Installation of steering pump LUK VT77 and
LF77
1.

Transfer the drive sprocket to the steering

pump to be fitted, if necessary.

Thoroughly remove any preserving grease,

especially from the tapered parts.

Apply locking compound to the attachment

nut and tighten them to the specified torque.

See 'Technical data'.

2.

If necessary, connect the line couplings to

the steering pump to be fitted. Tighten the

couplings to the specified torques, see

'Technical data'.

If the specified tightening torques

are exceeded, the aluminium pump

housing may be damaged.

3.

Fit a new O-ring to the steering pump and

grease it lightly.

attachment bolts evenly to the specified

tightening torque, see 'Technical data'.

5.

Fit the lines.

6.

Fill and bleed the steering gear hydraulic

system.

7.

Re-connect the wiring harness as it was

originally connected.

8.

Take a test drive and check the line

connections for leaks.
