Removal

Operating switches

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Remove power window operating switch and disconnect power window harness connector.

Installation

Operating switches

1. Install power window switch on door trim.

A. Set power window operating switch into armrest cavity and snap switch assembly into place.

2. Connect power window harness connector to power window operating switch.

3. Connect negative battery cable.

Description

Rear window is equipped with heating elements that clear condensation, frost and light show. Baked inside
surface, heating elements, or grid lines, are connected to vertical buss bar lines that comprise an electrical
circuit.
When dash-mounted switch is pressed, electric current is supplied through defrost relay in fuse box of engine
compartment. Should rear glass not be cleared, switch must be pressed again for another 15 minutes heating
cycle.

Circuit operation

Battery voltage is always applied from "DEFOG (20A)" to one side of the rear defroster relay and the other side
of the relay is connected to the rear window defroster, mirror defroster and defroster indicator. The indicator
and defrosters is grounded permanently.
With the ignition switch "ON" position, battery voltage is applied to one side of the rear defroster relay coil and
the other side of rear defroster relay coil is connected to terminal P(P) of the ETWIS.
When the rear defroster switch is pressed, the ETWIS module senses the ground signal through terminal
A(Y/G), the rear defroster switch, and B wire, which grounds one side of the relay coil by activating the internal
solid state of ETWIS. The rear defroster relay energizes and applies battery voltage to the indicator and
defrosters until the ETWIS is deactivated.

Troubleshooting

Rear defroster Does Not Operate.

Preliminary Check:
Check for rear defroster relay and "DEFOG (20A)" and "MIRROR DEF (10A)" fuse. If open, check for short to
ground though the wire and replace fuse and relay. In addition, check that all system electrical connectors
mated correctly.

I-01.
Is battery voltage present.

Yes

Go to next step

No

Repair open or short in the
wire "R" or replace as
necessary.

Turn the ignition switch to ON position.
Check for voltage at terminal M(Y) of ETWIS connector I-01.
Is battery voltage present.

Yes

Go to next step

No

Repair open or short in the
wire "Y" or replace as
necessary.

Check for continuity at terminal S(B) of ETWIS connector
I-01 to ground.
Is continuity present?

Yes

Go to next step

No

Check for a poor connection
at ground. If OK, repair or
replace B wire.

Check for continuity between terminal B(B) of rear defroster
switch connector I-17 and ground.
Is continuity present?

Yes

Go to next step

No

Check for a poor connection
at ground. If OK, repair open
in the wire "B" or replace.

With pressed rear defroster switch, check for continuity
between terminal A(Y/G) of rear defroster connector I-17and
ground.
Is continuity present?

Yes

Go to next step

No

Check for a poor connection
at rear defroster switch.
If OK, replace the rear
defroster switch.

With pressed rear defroster switch, check for continuity
between terminal A(Y/G) of ETWIS I-01 and ground.Is
continuity present?

Yes

Go to next step

No

Repair open or short in the
wire "Y/G" or replace.

Press rear defroster switch once. Check for continuity
between terminal P(P) of ETWIS I-01 and ground.Is
continuity present?

Yes

Go to next step

No

Check for a poor connection
at ETWIS. If OK, repair open
in the wire "P" or replace.

Check for voltage at following terminals.
Is battery voltage present respectively?

Yes

Inspection rear defroster grid
and go to next step.

No

Repair open or short in the
wire "R/W" or/and "R/B" or
replace.

9

Check for continuity between following terminals and ground.

Yes

Inspect mirrror defroster.
