When Monitored and Set Condition:

P1771-INADEQUATE ELEMENT VOLUME 2C

When Monitored:

Whenever the engine is running. The 2C volume is updated during a

3-2 kickdown with throttle angle between 20 and 54 degrees. Trans temp must be at least
110 degrees F.

Set Condition:

When the 2C volume falls below 5.

NOTE: Low fluid level can be the cause of many transmission problems. If
the fluid level is low locate and repair the leak then check and adjust the
fluid level per the service information.
NOTE: Always perform diagnostics with a fully charged battery to avoid
false symptoms.
With the DRBIII

t, read the engine DTC’s. Check and repair all engine DTC’s prior

to performing transmission symptom diagnostics.
With the DRBIII

t, read Transmission DTC’s. Record all DTC’s and 1 Trip Failures.

NOTE: Diagnose 1 Trip Failures as a fully matured DTC.
Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors.
Repair as necessary.
Perform the Shift Lever Position Test. If the test does not pass, refer to Symptom test
for P0705 Check Shifter Signal.
For Gear Ratio DTC’s, check and record all CVI’s.
Most DTC’s set on start up but some must be set by driving the vehicle such that all
diagnostic monitors have run.
Note: Verify flash level of transmission controller. Some problems are
corrected by software upgrades to the transmission controller.
NOTE: Check for applicable TSB’s related to the problem.
Perform this procedure prior to Symptom diagnosis.

With the DRBIII

t, check and write down the 2 clutch volume.

With the DRBIII

t, erase DTC9s

Drive the vehicle at about 80 Km/h 50 MPH, then depress the OD off button. This will
put the vehicle into third gear.
Perform at least ten 10 3-2 kickdowns by depressing the throttle between 20 and 54
degrees from about 80 Km/h 50 MPH. The transmission temperature must be at least
43° Celsius 110° Fahrenheit.
With the DRBIII

t, check and write down the 2 clutch volume.

Is the 2C volume below 10?

Check the transmission fluid level per the service information.
Note: The transmission must be hot when checking oil level. When the
temperature is below 10 degrees C (50 degrees F). it is possible that no oil
will show on the dipstick, even though the transmission has an adequate fill
level when warm.
Is the fluid level OK?

Repair

Repair internal transmission problem as required. If the trans-
mission is to be repaired,pay special attention to the mechanical
components related to the 2 clutch. A deteriorated return spring or
a dislocated snap ring could cause this problem.
Perform 45RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - VER
1.

Perform eight learnable starts. A learnable start is defined as follows: Start engine.
From a standstill, accelerate lightly to 80 Km/h 50 MPH, then brake lightly to a stop.
Turn off engine.
With the DRBIII

t, observe and record CVI’s.

With the DRBIII

t, perform a battery disconnect.

With the DRBIII

t, observe and record CVI’s.

Are any of the CVI’s less than 5 or are they different than before the battery
disconnect?

When the OD volume falls below 6.
