CHAPTER FIVE
CLUTCH AND PRIMARY DRIVE

This chapter describes service procedures for the clutch and primary drive. Tables 1-4 are at the end of the chapter.

OUTER PRIMARY COVER

Removal

Refer to Figure 1.

1. Support the bike on a level surface.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

WARNING Disconnect the negative battery cable before working on the clutch or any primary drive component. Otherwise, you may receive a serious personal injury if the starter motor is accidentally activated.

3. Place a drain pan under the primary cover and remove the oil drain plug (Figure 2). Allow the oil to drain. Reinstall and tighten the drain plug.
4. Remove the shift lever and the left-hand footpeg assembly (Figure 3).

5. Remove the primary chain inspection cover (Figure 4) and the gasket.

6. Remove the bolts securing the primary cover (Figure 5) to the chaincase and remove the primary cover.

7. On 1995 models, remove the 2 round gaskets (Figure 6) installed between the primary cover and chaincase.

8. Remove the dowel pins, if necessary.

Inspection

1. Remove all gasket residue from the primary cover (A, Figure 7) and chaincase gasket surfaces.

2. Clean the primary cover in solvent and dry with compressed air.

3. Inspect the starter jackshaft bushing (B, Figure 7) for excessive wear, cracks or other damage. To replace the bushing, perform the following:

a. Remove the bushing with a blind bearing removal tool.
