TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR

1. Place gearshift lever in Neutral position. Remove shift cable from instruction control lever. Remove manual

control lever. Loosen Transmission Range (TR) sensor retaining bolts.

2. Install TR Sensor Adjustor (307-351). See Fig. 12 . Tighten TR sensor retaining bolts to specification.

See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

3. Install instruction control lever, and tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

Check for Park gear engagement. Start engine and ensure indicated gear positions match transmission
response.

4. If operation is not okay, check shift cable adjustment. See SHIFT CABLE . Verify vehicle only starts in

Park and Neutral, and back-up lights operate.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION: On models equipped with 4R70W, discard outer instruction control lever shaft

nut. Do not reuse. The old nut will not retain torque specification.

NOTE:

On vehicles equipped with auxiliary batteries, both the negative and positive
battery cables must be disconnected.

COOLER BY-PASS VALVE (4R100)

Removal & Installation

1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front cooler line from front Cooler By-Pass Valve (CBV), fitting. See

Fig. 13 . Remove rear cooler line from rear CBV fitting. Remove front and rear CBV bolt cooler line case
fittings. Clean and flush CBV. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.

2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check rubber coated sealing washers for damage. Replace as

needed. Use sealant or threadlock meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 and coat line case fitting
threads. Install CBV with check ball at rear fitting. This allows fluid to flow in one direction only. Ensure
that check ball moves freely.

WARNING:

Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system.
When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment.
SIR system-related components are located in various locations
throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do
not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary,
deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG
DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems

may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer
systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN
PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting
battery.

CAUTION: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut OFF prior

to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be
accomplished by turning OFF the air suspension switch located in the
right kick panel area. Failure to do so may result in unexpected inflation or
deflation of the air springs which may result in shifting of the vehicle
during these operations.

NOTE:

Cooler By-Pass Valve (CBV) must be thoroughly cleaned and flushed out at this
time. DO NOT lose rubber coated sealing washers when removing CBV cooler
line case fittings.

CAUTION: Ensure CBV is properly back flushed. Use dry compressed air to

remove excess solvent. If an overhaul is being performed, replace
Oil-To-Air (OTA) cooler.

CAUTION: If cooler line case fitting is over-tightened, rubber coated sealing

washers and/or cooler line case fittings can be damaged, causing a
transmission fluid leak.
