ACTIVATING SYSTEM

General Activating Procedure (Seats Installed)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable, if necessary. On models equipped with seat belt pretensioners, remove

air bag simulators from right and left pretensioner harness connectors and reconnect connectors. Install
trim panels and components removed to access seat belt pretensioners. Tighten seat belt guide nuts and
mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

2. On all models, remove air bag simulator from passenger-side air bag module harness connector and

reconnect connector. Install instrument panel relay cover. Remove air bag simulator from clockspring
harness connector and reconnect connectors. Install lower instrument panel steering column cover. Install
hood release lever and parking release lever. Install central junction fuse box panel cover.

3. Reconnect negative battery cable. With all air bags installed and connected, perform system operation

check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . Reprogram pre-set radio frequencies and set clock.

Diagnostics Activating Procedure (Seats Removed)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored

energy. Remove air bag simulators from right and left pretensioner harness connectors and reconnect
connectors. Tighten seat belt guide nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install trim
panels and components removed to access seat belt pretensioners. Install front seats.

WARNING:

Seat belt pretensioner malfunction is possible. Personal injury may result.
Inspect shoulder seat belt guide cover for damage. If cover is damaged or
will not remained closed, replace seat belt guide cover with new part.

air bag module. Remove air bag simulator from upper clockspring connector and install driver-side air
bag module. Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM
OPERATION CHECK
. Perform computer relearn procedure. See COMPUTER RELEARN .
Reprogram pre-set radio frequencies and set clock.

COMPUTER RELEARN (SEATS INSTALLED)

When battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while vehicle
relearns its adaptive strategy. Vehicle may need to be driven for approximately 10 miles or more to relearn
strategy.

AIR BAG SIMULATOR (SEATS INSTALLED)

To remove risk of accidental air bag deployment while diagnostics are performed, Air Bag Simulators (418-
F088/105-R0012, and 418-133/40-009) or equivalent are required. See Fig. 2 . An air bag simulator is a 2-ohm
resistor with appropriate connector and is used to simulate air bag module connection to the system. DO NOT
short-circuit air bag module connections with a zero-ohm jumper wire. If zero-ohm jumper is used, a Light
Flash Code (LFC) will be displayed.

DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

Air bag disposal may be necessary in following situations:

z

Scrapping vehicle with deployed air bag or pretensioner.

z

Scrapping vehicle with live air bag or pretensioner.

z

Disposal of a live but electrically faulty air bag module or pretensioner.

z

Disposal of a deployed air bag module or pretensioner.

AIR BAG AND PRETENSIONER DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

NOTE:

Disposal of undeployed air bag may violate federal, state and/or local laws. If
scrapping vehicle, air bags must be deployed while mounted in vehicle. If this is
not possible, remove air bag and deploy remotely. If air bag cannot be
deployed, contact vehicle manufacturer for further instructions.

DEPLOYED AIR BAG (SEATS INSTALLED)

Dispose of deployed air bag module as any other part. Air bag module components are not reusable.

UNDEPLOYED AIR BAG OR PRETENSIONER-FAULTY UNIT (SEATS INSTALLED)

If an undeployed air bag module or seat belt pretensioner is diagnosed as faulty, remove faulty device and
return intact to Ford Motor Company for proper disposal. Return carton for warranty claim credit. Air bag must
be packaged and shipped according to U.S. Department of Transportation procedures. Retain replacement
packaging including label. DO NOT deploy air bag.

SCRAPPED VEHICLE (SEATS INSTALLED)

If vehicle is to be scrapped, undeployed air bags and pretensioners must first be deployed. Use the following
procedures for deployment of air bags and pretensioners.

Remote Deployment Of AIR Bag (Seats Installed)

This procedure is to be used when a vehicle with a live driver-side or passenger-side air bag is to be scrapped.

1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Disable air bag system. See

Module or pretensioner replacement

NOTE:

Do not dispose of undeployed air bag modules or pretensioners without first
deploying devices. If this is not possible through procedure outlined, contact
vehicle manufacturer for further instructions.

WARNING:

Air bags being deployed may cause objects to be projected away from air
bag. Also, loud noise occurs during deployment. Personal injury and
hearing damage may result. To ensure physical and hearing safety,
perform remote deployment outdoors and keep all personnel at least 20
feet (6.09 m) away from deployment area. Wear safety goggles and
