DPFEGR 
 
If DPFEGR HOT IDLE PID is not within .15 volt of KOEO value; 

z

For vehicles equipped with ESM EGR, go to TEST HH: EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION 
SYSTEM MODULE
 , step 100) under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, 
FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article.  

z

All others, go to TEST HE: EGR SYSTEM , step 100) under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-

LONGFT1 &/Or LONGFT2 
 
If LONGFT1 or LONGFT2 PID is low (-20 percent or less), concentrate checks in areas that would cause 
engine to run rich. If LONGFT1 or LONGFT2 PID is high (+20 percent or more), concentrate checks in 
areas that would cause engine to run lean. 

IMTVF (Econoline & Pickup 4.6L, & Navigator 5.4L (4V) Only) 
 
Ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral. Record IMTVF PID value when ignition switch is turned to 
OFF position. Then start engine and raise engine speed to 3000 RPM. IMTVF PID value should indicate 
NO (no fault) in both situations. If IMTVF PID value indicates YES (fault is present) during either 
situation, go to TEST HU: AIR INTAKE SYSTEM , step 65) under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-
DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article.  

Miscellaneous Component Or System Checks 

Check the following:

Check fuel delivery system. Go to TEST HB: NATURAL GAS FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM , step 1)
(Natural Gas models), or go to TEST HC: GASOLINE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM , step 1) (all 
others) under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article.

Check secondary ignition system. Go to TEST JB: SECONDARY IGNITION , step 1) under SYSTEM 
TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article.

Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Go to TEST DC: MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR , step 25) under

Check exhaust system for restriction. Go to TEST HF: CATALYST EFFICIENCY MONITOR &

Check engine compression. Check engine mechanical condition and repair as necessary. Check intake

On A/T models, diagnose by symptom (POOR PERFORMANCE). See appropriate OVERHAUL or 
DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.  

z

Check for binding or dragging brakes. See appropriate article in BRAKES.

2003 ENGINE PERFORMANCE Trouble Shooting - No Codes - CNG, Flex-Fuel & Gasoline

  

Lack/Loss Of Power (Mustang Only) 

Ensure A/C clutch disengages under Wide Open Throttle (WOT) conditions and engages a few seconds after 
returning to idle. If A/C does not cut off, see A/C DOES NOT TURN OFF DURING WOT (MUSTANG) 
symptom under CLIMATE CONTROL (LACK OF A/C COOLING, A/C ALWAYS ON OR A/C 
INOPERATIVE). 

Lack/Loss Of Power (Supercharged Applications) 

Check supercharger bypass system operation. Go to TEST KJ: SUPERCHARGER BY-PASS CONTROL , 
step 13) under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. 

Lack/Loss Of Power (F150 Lightning 5.4L SC Only) 

Also check high speed fuel pump secondary circuits. Go to TEST KJ: SUPERCHARGER BY-PASS 
CONTROL

Additional Intermittent Testing

Additional Checks 

Check customer driving habits. Ensure Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Vehicle Identification (VID) block is 
correct. See FLASH VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION BLOCK PROCEDURE under PROGRAMMING 
PCM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. Check Intake Manifold Runner 
Control (IMRC) linkage, if equipped. Check instruction transmission or clutch assembly. Check charging system. 
See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL. Check engine RPM/speed 
limiting functions of PCM. Check for incorrect high vehicle speed signal from ABS, VSS or OSS. 

SPARK KNOCK 

Preliminary Checks 

Ensure engine is not exceeding normal operating temperature. Check cooling system for overheating, correct 
coolant level and coolant concentration. If cooling system is overheating, repair as necessary. See appropriate 
article in ENGINE COOLING. 

Miscellaneous Component Or System Checks 

Check the following:  

NOTE:

Some models use a PID that will indicate whether PCM is reducing torque (095E 
b0), and if so, why torque is being reduced (095Eb1-13). Refer to scan tool 
manufacturer's operating instructions.

Visually inspect engine oil quality.

POOR FUEL ECONOMY 

Preliminary Checks 

Check for restricted air filter/air intake duct. Check Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level. Check fuel 
quality and coolant level. Ensure engine is operating at normal operating temperature. Check cooling system for 
stuck open or closed thermostat, correct coolant level or coolant concentration. Repair as necessary. See 
appropriate article in ENGINE COOLING. 

Symptom Checks Using Scan Tool PIDs 

Check and compare the following PID values to PID specifications in appropriate PIN VOLTAGE/PID 
VALUE CHARTS article. 

DPFEGR 
 
If DPFEGR HOT IDLE PID is not within .15 volt of KOEO value; 

NOTE:

Fuel consumption can be increased during stop-and-go driving, trailer towing, 
short-run operation, extended winter warm-up periods, improper tire inflation or 
size, high speed driving, improper axle ratio, road and weather conditions, and 
aftermarket add-ons. Determine if any of these factors are the cause of poor fuel 
mileage before proceeding with diagnostic procedure.

NOTE:

On some models, DPFEGR PID may not be available.

VPWR 
 
VPWR PID voltage should be 10.5-17.0 volts and within .5 volt of battery voltage. If VPWR PID voltage 
is not 10.5-17.0 volts, check and repair charging system as necessary. See appropriate GENERATORS & 
REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL. If VPWR PID voltage is 10.5-17.0 volts but not within .5 volt 
of battery voltage, check B+ circuit to PCM power relay (or CCRM), VPWR circuit between PCM and 
PCM power relay or CCRM, and PWR GND circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
