Preliminary Procedures 1. Disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle . 3. Remove the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement (JD9) or Parking Brake Shoe Replacement (JH6, JH7). 4. Remove the rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle w/Drum Brake w/VSES) or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle 5. Disconnect the park brake cable from the actuator lever. CAUTION: Refer to Brake Dust Caution . 1 Park Brake Backing Plate Bolt (Qty: 4) Procedure 1. Remove all traces of the adhesive patch on the park brake backing plate bolts. 2. Clean the park brake backing plate bolt threads with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. 3. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to 2/3 of the threaded portion of the bolt. Tighten: 135 N.m (100 lb ft) NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice . 2 Park Brake Backing Plate Procedure 1. Remove all traces of the adhesive patch in the rear axle flange threaded holes. 2. Clean the rear axle flange threaded holes with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.

PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT (DRUM BRAKE) 1. Apply and fully release the park brake several times. Verify that the park brake pedal releases completely. 2. Turn ON the ignition. Verify the red BRAKE warning lamp is not illuminated. 3. If the red BRAKE warning lamp is illuminated, verify the following: The park brake pedal is in the fully released position and against the stop. There is no slack in the park brake cables. 4. If the red BRAKE warning lamp remained illuminated and there were no other visible causes, Refer to Symptoms - Hydraulic Brakes . 5. Turn OFF the ignition. 6. Raise and support the vehicle just enough to allow the rear tires and wheel assembly removal and rear brake drum adjustment. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle . 7. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation . 8. Adjust the rear drum brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment . 9. Ensure there is no brake shoe drag after adjustment by rotating the brake drums. If drag exists, re-center the brake shoes and perform the brake shoe adjustment again. 10. Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation . 11. Fully apply and release the park brake pedal 3-5 times in order for the cable tensioner to 3. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling. 4. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment (Drum Brake) or Park Brake Adjustment (Disc Brake). IMPORTANT: This vehicle utilizes a self-tensioning, or self-adjusting park brake cable system. take up any slack in the park brake cables. 12. Fully apply the park brake pedal, a firm pedal should be obtained by depressing the pedal less than one full stroke. 13. Attempt to rotate the rear brake drums. There should be no rotation forward or rearward. 14. Fully release the park brake pedal. 15. Verify the park brake is released by rotating the rear brake drums. The drums should rotate freely and exhibit no brake shoe drag. 16. Lower the vehicle.
