TEXT 1

1. Read the text.

Where are you right now? At home, university, a friend’s house, a cyber cafe? Look around, what do you see? You see walls, floors, ceilings and furniture. At first glance it appears typical of interior space and your activities continue. Do you realize that you evaluate your surroundings and react to them? A positive reaction goes unnoticed. A negative reaction can affect your mood, health and interpersonal relations. The physical environment affects the occupants. It’s not just walls, floors, colors and furniture, it’s an environment that is created through design.

Interior design studies the relationship between physical space and its occupants. At first glance it might appear negligible, but think of places you like. Certain restaurants, stores, rooms in your house or even the work place and ask why? Typically it is due to the design of the space. Design elements work together in creating an environment that solicits response.

An interior designer learns to understand the design process and its application in daily life. This is an area in which we are all participants beginning from the colors in our nursery. What should be recommended? Shape the environment and thus, you will change the future.

The History of Interior Design

In the modern world, human life activities are played out in interior spaces. We may love being out-of-doors for the sense of open air and sky, for the escape it offers from life inside enclosure, but the very joy of being outside reflects the reality that so much of life is spent inside.

Buildings and their interiors are planned to serve the purposes and styles from the times of their origins, but they exert their influence on the activities and lives that they house as long as they continue to be used.

The study of interior design, its development and change through history is a useful way both to explore the past and to make sense of the spaces in which modern life is lived.

Professional interior designers are expected to study design history, to know the practices of the past in the terms of “styles”, and to know the names and the nature of the contributions of those individuals who generated the most interesting and influential approaches to design.

Antoni Gaudi

In Barcelona, Spain, although there is a variety of work in the Art Nouveau style, the dominant figure of Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) stands out as the inventor of a highly personal vocabulary of flowing curves and unusual decorative details.

His 1904-1906 reconstruction of an older building, Casa Batllу, included a new facade of complex, bone-like forms with a fantastic roof line and, for some apartments, remarkable interiors. Paneled doors are studded with small mirrors of irregular shape; ceilings are of plaster in swirling curved forms.

Gaudi developed fantastic curving, sometimes bone-like, sometimes wiry forms for furniture designed to be custom made by skilled craftsmen for specific projects. The Guell Park (1905-1914) and unfinished Sagrada Familia church (1903-1926) exhibit Gaudi's fantastic and highly personal stylistic vocabulary on a major scale.

Gerrit Rietveld

The best known De Stijl ("the style") work was produced by Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964), whose Schruder House at Utrecht is the most complete realization of the movement's ideas. It is a rectilinear block made up of complex, interpenetrating planes of wall, roof, and protruding floor, with voids filled by glass in metal sash.

The (upper) main living floor is divided by a system of sliding panels that permit rearrangement to achieve varying degrees of openness. Built-in and movable furniture of Rietveld's design is geometric and abstract in concept. Only primary colors and black are introduced within the generally white and gray tones of most surfaces.

Because of its few members, short life, and limited accomplishments, De Stijl influence in the development of modernism has been less obvious than that of the pioneers in Germany and France.

interpenetrating - взаимопроникающий

plane – плоскость

Alvar Aalto

The most important of the "second-tier" pioneer modernists is the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976). Aalto's career began amid the romanticism and Nordic nationalism of Lars Sonck and Eliel Saarinen, with its links to Neoclassicism and Jugendstil movements of the late 19th century.

Americans were able to see an Aalto design at first hand at the New York World's Fair of 1939. The box-like interior space of the Finnish exhibit was made remarkably interesting by the introduction of flowing, free-form walls. There was a wall of wood strips over the main exhibit space that screened additional exhibit space on an upper level.

A balcony restaurant with provision for film projection from a startling suspended free-form projection booth completed the exhibit. In spite of its small size and somewhat obscure location at the fair, Aalto's design attracted highly favorable critical comment.

Pierre Chareau

Pierre Chareau (1883-1950) is best known for his 1928-32 Maison de Verre (House of Glass) in Paris that made use of steel framing and large areas of glass block and plate glass.

Philip Johnson

In 1949, aware of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth house, Philip Johnson designed his own house at New Canaan, Connecticut, as an all glass-walled box with only a small cylindrical brick enclosure to house a bathroom and to provide a location for a fireplace.

The kitchen was a counter with lift tops giving access to equipment. The furniture was all of Mies's design, using brown leather on chrome frameworks, while major works of art introduced a variety of less rigorous forms into the space. The red tiles of the floor and the outward view into surrounding greenery establish color.

This "Glass House" has become a famous example of the possibilities of an open plan carried to its logical, extreme conclusion.

Walter Gropius

The direct influence of International Style modernism increased hugely when several of the European leaders of the movement arrived in the United States.

Walter Gropius was the architect of his own house at Lincoln, Massachusetts (1937). A fine example of International Style design, it has a typical flat roof, large glass areas, and such details as an entrance supported by tubular columns, an external spiral stair, and generous use of glass block.

The white walls are, surprisingly, not of concrete or stucco but of wood boards typical of vernacular New England building. The interiors are of elegant simplicity and display many pieces of furniture by various members of the modern movement. The house is now landmarked and open to visitors.

TEXT 4

1. Read the text.

What colors are the rooms in your house painted? Would it surprise you to learn that the colors around you can affect how you feel? Well, it’s true, color can drastically affect your mood. So it makes sense to surround yourself with colors you like and ones that will put you into a positive frame of mind.

Red, for example, is a strong color, so too much of it in a room can be overwhelming. But, in small amounts, red is energizing and can make us feel active and excited. Red is best used outside or in a room where we spend a short amount of time each day.

Orange can make us feel enthusiastic and talkative. Extroverts usually prefer this color because it makes them feel adventurous. Orange stimulates our appetites too, so it would be perfect for the kitchen or dining room.

Yellow is an uplifting color and can make us feel cheerful and happy. However, it is a color that should be used sparingly because too much can make us feel impatient.

Blue is the color that is most universally preferred, and blue rooms instil peacefulness so it is a good choice for studies or doctors’ waiting rooms. Blue can also help us feel calm and confident, but it suppresses our appetites so it’s only a good choice for the kitchen if you are on a diet.

Green is often used in hospitals because of its soothing properties. It has the power to make us feel relaxed and refreshed. Therefore, don’t paint a work area green because you won’t get much work done. Green is a good choice for bedrooms.

White is often used in doctors’ offices because it gives us an impression of cleanliness. However, it does nothing to relax us – we just feel cautious and nervous. It can also make us feel isolated and withdrawn.

Therefore, we should think carefully about our color schemes when the time comes to redecorate because different colors can affect how we feel in a number of ways. That said, though, we should rely on our taste and surround ourselves with the colors we like and feel comfortable with. Use your favourite colors to create a color scheme you know you can live with.

drastically – круто, резко

a positive frame of mind – положительный настрой

overwhelming - подавляющий

sparingly – скупо, нечасто

impatient - нетерпеливый

to instil – внушать, вселять

confident - уверенный

to suppress - подавлять

cautious - осторожный

isolated - изолированный

withdrawn – сдержанный, замкнутый

to rely on – полагаться, рассчитывать

2. Find the English equivalents in the text:

3. True or false:

1. Red color always makes us feel active and excited.

2. Orange can make us feel talkative.

3. Yellow is a color that can improve our mood.

Compare the following adjectives: surprised/surprising and depressed/depressing. They are different in meaning.

We use the -ed form of the adjectives to describe people's feelings. People are surprised, bored, excited, etc. We use the -ing form of the adjectives to describe things or situations. They are depressing, boring, exciting, etc.

We often use the pattern I find + noun + -ing adjective. For example: I find the party really boring.

4. Speak about different colors. Say how each of them influences us and our mood.

Example: I find red an exciting color. I’m excited by red.

5. Match the color and the effect it has on people:

Architect Yury Andreev says he likes simple things and simple, ordinary food; but VILLA, the restaurant he has designed on Moscow's Myasnitskaya street, offers only refined European cuisine. He also says he does not like to travel doing so only when absolutely necessary and preferring a little evening reading, especially of architectural albums, to a change of scenery. But since the disappearance of the Soviet Union, he has spent his life travelling between two countries: Russia and Latvia. Yury is convinced that an interior decorator is simply an architect in truncated form, and for this reason never engages decorators to take part in his projects. He designed and decorated VILLA, his latest creation, from start to finish entirely on his own in the best traditions of Art Deco. The simple, but elegant furniture combined with the exotic decor; the abundance of sculpture in the interior; the beauty of line; the expressiveness of the materials; the blue, red, brown, and gold: all this is evidence of style. Add the genuine smell of money in the air and what you get is Art Deco, a style "whose main goal was the creation of prosperity and luxury in the years of the lost generation," as Soviet art critics used to write. They, of course, hated Art Deco as a class enemy — but we love it.

Museums come in different categories: there are treasure houses of world importance and small provincial museums on the other.

Every second summer, Monaco hosts a true festival of all the arts. Since 1975, Monaco has held a biennial antiques fair, which attracts all the most expensive art of private collections. Everything on sale here has to pass a tough selection procedure, and this turns the fair into a parade of top-quality world art.

The Monaco Antiques Fair is the brainchild of three towering figures from the European antiques world — Mario Bellini, Jacques Perrin, and Maurice Segoura. They based the event on a very clear concept: a limited number of participants and objects of truly exceptional quality.

Visitors have the opportunity to feast their eyes on canvases in gilded frames; graphic art by French, Italian, and Flemish masters; contemporary painting; and a great quantity of furniture, pieces of applied art, old gobelins, carpets, and some lavish sculptures.

The antiques dealers display their treasures in the Sporting d'Hiver, building in the Art Deco style. The fair is visited by up to 20,000 antiques aficionados.

Gareth Williams, London’s trendiest museum curator, speaks about the Victoria and Albert museum in London:

“The Victoria and Albert Museum was established as a collection showcasing industrial design; it was never a museum of fine arts. The driving idea is to inspire designers and the industry in general to create beautiful things. Today, we are returning to these origins; we are in the very centre of the creation of style. The museum has undergone some appreciable changes: it’s become a more fascinating place to work. We now pay more attention to contemporary design and architecture. Open evenings and fashion shows at the museum attract visitors who only five to ten years ago had never even heard of it. The museum has become more responsive to new developments and is part of a programme for promoting British designers…”

The twentieth century is the first century of self-conscious, total design at every level of our living and environment. Care and vision in application of design are demanded in every aspect of modern life - from our kitchens and bathrooms, to our factories and workshops, from our clothes and domestic objects, to the packaging of pocket calculators or the structuring of plastic dining chairs.

Although the word has been used since at least the fifteenth century, when Italian writers spoke of 'disegno' in describing the quality of line possessed by an image, in all essentials 'design' is an industrial or post-industrial concept. With the introduction of mass-production, the people who invented ideas for objects became separated from the people who made them who, again, were separated from the people who sold them. The industrial revolution also created the concept of the market. Personal need was replaced by a more abstract demand: the tastes of a large, amorphous body of consumers.

The modern designer came into being as an intermediary between industry and the consumer. His role was to adapt the products of industry to the mass market, to make them more useful and durable, perhaps, but to make them more appealing and commercially successful, certainly. Commercial success is the touchstone of achievement in design, although designers in different cultures have often taken different views as to how the achievement is measured or the success validated.

Design in business and advertisement means much. The story of style in the applied arts since the mid-to late fifties has been dominated by various new forces, including social and economic factors and certain aspects of technical and scientific progress. Now we have computer design, web design, advertisement design (for example consumer-product branding design) and the whole fashion of different types of ad, colors and so on.

The late fifties saw the birth of advertising as we know it today, a high-powered business dedicated to the development effective marketing techniques; it involved new design concepts and a whole new professional jargon of product packaging, market research, corporate images and house style.

The Pop Art movement embraced the work of a new generation of artists of late fifties and early sixties of both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain, in addition to the Independent Group, there were Peter Blake, Allen Jones. In USA Jasper Johns, Tom Wesselman, Claes Oldenburg and other formalized the language of product packaging, from beer cans to Campbell's Soup tins of strip cartoons, fast food, advertising hoardings and pin-ups.

Pop Art at once reflected and glorified mass-market culture and injected a new vigour into the applied arts. Pop Art suggested a new palette оf colours and gave a fresh, ironical edge to the imagery of popular culture. Pop Art positively encouraged designers to exploit vulgarity, brashness and bright colour, and to use synthetic or disposable materials in contexts in which they would formerly have been unacceptable. Pop Art has had a lasting effect on design in a wide variety of media, including interiors, graphics and fashion.

Additionally, the industrial designer may specify aspects concerning the production process, choice of materials and the presentation of a product to the consumer at the point of sale. Tricia Foley, author, editor, and product designer loves natural colors and vintage linens. She employs a simple decorating style that is both practical and personal. Showcased in the book, Designer In Residence, her house is a study of simplicity and restraint. It was constructed from stock lumber and easily available parts. The room welcomes guests all summer long with an interior in white, beige, tan, and other natural colors and accessories. She notes; "A classic neutral color scheme creates a soothing background for the life you lead in your home, surrounded by the things that have meaning to you. " If you love the idea of simple vintage decor, you will want to hear what else Tricia has to say about decorating...

Q . What are some of the common decorating mistakes made by homeowners? What is your advice on how to avoid or correct those mistakes?

Tricia Foley : "I think that many people try to copy what's trendy rather than trusting their own personal style in decorating a home and then the look doesn't last. If you're really not sure about making decorating decisions, keep a file of pictures of favorite rooms culled from books and magazines to help narrow it down.

"In terms of color for walls, I always do a test patch and live with it to see how the color responds to the light and with the existing furnishings. It's also important to put it all together and make sure that your color palette is compatible and that you're not acquiring furniture and accessories in bits and pieces that don't work together."

Q. What would be your recommendation for "what to do first" in a decorating project?

Tricia Foley : "It makes sense to follow the architectural style of the space. Determine the function of the room and really think about how you will use it. Then furnish it appropriately for those uses. Finally, layer of your own personal style – not someone else's. Aim for personal comfort as well as visual appeal level."

Q . What tips do you have on themes, fabric and color choices, window treatments, furniture, etc. when decorating a long lasting room for a young child?

Tricia Foley : "First I would consider the existing style of the home. When working with a traditional home, I would tend to use a softer color palette that works with the rest of the house or apartment. If the family has a more modern sensibility, a clean bright color palette would be more in keeping with their aesthetic. There are so many wonderful choices available from mail order catalogs these days. You'll find furnishings that are affordable and have classic styling that can be used in children's rooms or family rooms."

Q . What trends do you see in room décor for kids in colors, themes, furnishings, etc.?

Tricia Foley : "I see children's rooms as part of the home, not so much a separate world. I would design the space so that it visually belongs to the rest of the family spaces. It should also be a comfort zone for children and a place for them to express themselves with their own things — there are lots of great storage units, armoires, bins, etc. that are perfect for kids rooms."

Q . Many people like the idea of updating their interiors for the seasons. What techniques do you use to transition your home from winter into spring/summer?

Tricia Foley : "I have a simple shades of white interior in my little country house that is a great backdrop for the changing seasons. In spring a bucket of bright yellow forsythia is usually blooming. Summer brings piles of shells and stones from walks on the beach. I also love to have jugs of roses from my garden all over the house. I roll up the rugs and put away the flannel sheets and comforters. Fall brings out wool throws draped over chairs, a fire in the fireplace, and bittersweet branches to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside. The holiday season is always a white Christmas for me. Amaryllis and paperwhites are potted with moss. Then I use greens and simple white lights on the tree."

Q . What decorating techniques/ideas/projects would you recommend to a homeowner who wants to rev up the look of a bedroom or living room for spring, without spending a fortune?

Tricia Foley : "I find that all my friends are simplifying and just having the things they love around them. I find that clutter is so distracting and high maintenance. When you have a simple backdrop, it is easy to change a look with sheets, flowers, or arranging a collection in a new way. Sometimes, you don't even appreciate what you have, when you have too much around!"

Q . Most of us are always eager to know what are the "latest" color, design, and furnishings trend. Can you comment on what you see in trends and how homeowners might create interiors that are up-to-date but classic?

Tricia Foley : "Again, it's never made sense to me to create a Southwestern style home or a farmhouse look in a high rise apartment building in a city. My main objective is to design a space appropriately so it makes sense. Then everything seems to fall into place visually. A classic neutral color scheme creates a soothing backdrop for the life you lead in your home. Surround yourself with the things that have meaning to you. Although I've seen beautiful red living rooms and soft pink bedrooms that I've loved, I don't think I would want to live in them every day. A bunch of red tulips or bouquet of pale pink peonies in a neutral room does the trick for me!"

Q. Bookshelves are a wonderful place to display everything from collectibles and photographs to books and boxes. However, many homeowners find accessorizing a bookcase somewhat intimidating. Do you have any tips or advice for someone who would like to avoid the straight rows of books?

Q . Some people are baffled about where to place color. If their favourite color is blue for example, they do not know if they should buy a blue sofa, paint the walls blue, or order blue carpeting. Can you comment on using our favourite colors and ways to incorporate them into home décor?

Tricia Foley : "I always recommend painting patches of color on the wall to try out living with them and looking at the true color at different times of the day...taping up big memo samples of fabric on walls or pinning to existing furniture and spending some time with these "tests" also helps even the professionals make up their minds! Putting together simple boards with all the swatches will give an overview if it's difficult to imagine it all together."

Q. What advice do you have for someone with a new house to decorate and perhaps a limited budget?

Tricia Foley : "Go with good classic design in terms of furniture. I always look for multi-purpose pieces that can be used for other rooms as living conditions change. Set the scene for your own personal style with neutral walls and floors. Then add simple window treatments and bed linens to transform a space with color."
