AXLE SHAFTS

REMOVAL

(1) Place transmission in neutral.
(2) Raise and support vehicle.
(3) Remove wheel and tire assembly.
(4) Remove brake caliper (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/

HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/DISC

BRAKE

PERS - REMOVAL) and rotor. (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/
HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/ROTORS - REMOVAL)

(5) Remove nuts holding axle retainer plate to axle

tube from the rear of the axle flange.

(6) Pull axle shaft from the axle with Slide Ham-

mer 7420 and Adapter 6790. Mount the adapter to
the axle with lug nuts.

NOTE: It is normal that the axle bearing race is
loose in the axle tube.

INSTALLATION

(1) Insall axle into the axle tube with the flat area

of the retainer plate upward.

(2) Insert retaining plate studs into the brake

backing plate and axle tube flange.

(3) Install retainer nuts and tighten nuts to 61

N·m (45 ft. lbs.).

(4) Install the brake caliper (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/

HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/DISC

BRAKE

BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/ROTORS

INSTALLATION)

(5) Install wheel and tire.
(6) Check and fill the differential with gear lubri-

cant.

(7) Lower vehicle.

PINION GEAR/RING GEAR

REMOVAL

NOTE: The ring and pinion gears are serviced as a
matched set. Never replace one gear without the
other gear.

(1) Raise and support vehicle.

(2) Mark pinion yoke and propeller shaft for

installation reference.

(3) Disconnect propeller shaft from pinion yoke

and tie shaft to underbody.

(4) Remove differential from axle housing.
(5) Place differential case in a vise with soft metal

jaw.

(6) Remove bolts holding ring gear to differential

case.

(7) Drive ring gear from differential case with a

rawhide hammer (Fig. 20).

(8) Hold the pinion yoke with Spanner Wrench

6958 and remove the pinion yoke nut and washer
(Fig. 21).

(9) Remove pinion yoke from pinion shaft with

Remover C-452 and Wrench C-3281 (Fig. 22).

(10) Remove pinion gear from housing (Fig. 23).

(11) Remove pinion seal with Remover 7794-A and

a slide hammer (Fig. 24).

(12) Remove oil slinger, if equipped, and front pin-

ion bearing.

(13) Remove the front pinion bearing cup with

Remover D-103 and Handle C-4171 (Fig. 25).

(14) Remove rear bearing cup from housing (Fig.

26) with Remover C-4307 and Handle C-4171.

(15) Remove collapsible preload spacer (Fig. 27).
(16) Remove rear bearing from the pinion with

Puller/Press C-293-PA and Adapters C-293-42 (Fig.
28).

(17) Remove depth shims from the pinion gear

shaft and record shim thickness.
