NOTE:

• If the tailgate does not open in either swing mode or

flip mode because neither tailgate handle functions,
unlock the tailgate by directly accessing the right side
latches.

• In this case, something is the matter with tailgate

locking functions.

• Take care not to scratch the tailgate and damage the

taillight lens.

• Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to

avoid damage when prying components.

• Use protective tape on painted surfaces and the

taillight.

1. Using a trim tool (A), pry a right gap between the

tailgate and trim panel (B) to open up a 5 mm
(0.02 in.) gap.

NOTE: If you cannot create a large enough gap,
remove the passenger side tailgate trim panel bolt.
Use a flexible LED flashlight to help you locate the
latch tap.

2. Insert a flat-tip screwdriver in the gap between the

tailgate and the trim panel.

3. While pulling on the tailgate lower handle, use the

long thin prybar trim tool to push up on the latch
tab mechanism (A) on either the right upper latch
(B) or right lower latch (C) to open the tailgate:

• Take care not to damage the body, tailgate, or the

taillight.

• If the lower handle is malfunctioning, unlocking

both latches at the same time is required.

4. Swing the tailgate open, remove the tailgate trim

panel (see page 20-140), and then perform required
tailgate maintenance.

1. Open the tailgate.

NOTE:

• To open the tailgate in either swing mode or

drop-down mode allows you to remove the
tailgate trim panel.

• The drop-down mode is shown; the swing mode

is similar.

2. Remove the tailgate top trim (A).

–1 Remove the screws (B).
–2 Using a rubber mallet, slide the top trim to the

right, and remove it. The upper clips (C) will
stay in the tailgate.

–3 Remove the upper clips from the tailgate.

3. Using a TORX T40 bit, remove the bolts, and then

remove the tailgate trim panel (A).

4. Install the trim panel in the reverse order of

removal, and note these items:

• Check if the clips are damaged or stress-

whitened, and if necessary, replace them with
new ones.

• Before reinstalling the top trim, install the upper

clips on the trim. Hold the trim up, and fit all the
upper clips into the holes in the tailgate, then
push on the trim until the clips snap into place.

NOTE: Put on gloves to protect your hands.

1. Remove the tailgate trim panel (see page 20-140).

2. Disconnect the upper handle rod (A) and remove

the bolts securing the upper handle (B).

3. Push out the hooks (A) from inside of the tailgate,

and then remove the tailgate upper handle (B).
Take care not to scratch the tailgate.

4. Install the upper handle in the reverse order of

removal, and note these items:

• Make sure the upper handle rod is connected

securely.

• Make sure the tailgate opens in flip mode

properly.

NOTE:

• Put on gloves to protect your hands.
• Take care not to kink the cable.

1. Swing the tailgate open.

2. Remove the tailgate trim panel (see page 20-140).

3. Remove the tailgate lower handle (A).

–1 Detach the cable clip (B).
–2 Remove the nuts securing the lower handle.
–3 Pull out the handle and disconnect the lower

handle cable (C).

4. Install the lower handle in the reverse order of

removal, and note these items:

• Apply medium strength type liquid thread lock to

the stud-bolts before reinstalling the handle.

• Make sure the lower handle cable is connected

securely.

• Make sure the tailgate opens in swing mode

properly.
